Clan? its not somthing i've ever came across in martial arts.

Usually a clan is a large group of people who are all bound/related with the same name or ancestors. So i'm guessing it means families of ppl in which the martial art has been passed down through the years, maybe the desendants of a martial arts founder or grandmaster.

I can't say that I've heard it myself...I would imagine its a regional group of people that study the same cirriculum of the same art.

Uhm... in this PC game I used to play, Shogun: Total War, Japan was split up into different clans.. like the Takeda clan, Mori clan, etc. And the point of the game was to become the ultimate Shogun of Japan.

But, that's a computer game, so it's probably not accurate at all

In CMA, I've only seen reference to family styles of kung fu. Since the syles were limited to members of the family typically, they could be seen as clans, I guess, but I've never actually heard the term clan used in description of them.
