flameofthewest Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 Many times when researching martial arts of different styles, the word 'clan' appears. What defines a martial arts clan? What examples of clans still exist today?
Rich_2k3 Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 Clan? its not somthing i've ever came across in martial arts. Usually a clan is a large group of people who are all bound/related with the same name or ancestors. So i'm guessing it means families of ppl in which the martial art has been passed down through the years, maybe the desendants of a martial arts founder or grandmaster. WolverineGuy Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 I can't say that I've heard it myself...I would imagine its a regional group of people that study the same cirriculum of the same art. Wolverine1st Dan - Kalkinodo"Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a q-tip""There is no spoon."
kotegashiNeo Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 I only hear about clans when I reaserch the art of ninjutsu or that other infamous klan but I am sure no one wants to talk about them Kisshu fushin oni te hotoke kokoro
SevenStar Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 yeah, you really only hear that term when talking about ninja.
flameofthewest Posted April 18, 2004 Author Posted April 18, 2004 True, I see it when dealing with Ninjitsu alot, such as Koga clan ect. But I've seen it in use to Chinese martial arts as well.
delta1 Posted April 19, 2004 Posted April 19, 2004 The closest thing I can think of with the Chinese were the Tongs. Freedom isn't free!
TheDevilAside Posted April 19, 2004 Posted April 19, 2004 Uhm... in this PC game I used to play, Shogun: Total War, Japan was split up into different clans.. like the Takeda clan, Mori clan, etc. And the point of the game was to become the ultimate Shogun of Japan. But, that's a computer game, so it's probably not accurate at all "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Sir Winston Churchill
SevenStar Posted April 19, 2004 Posted April 19, 2004 In CMA, I've only seen reference to family styles of kung fu. Since the syles were limited to members of the family typically, they could be seen as clans, I guess, but I've never actually heard the term clan used in description of them.
