I know some groups learn Heian shodan as their first kata and some groups start with other katas. Which did you learn first? :???:

:???:Or, do the adults start with one kata and the kids class with another kata? :???:

Pinan Nidan, Pinan Sandan, Pinan Shodan, Pinan Yondan, Pinan Godan. Pinan is like Heian, except Pinan is a city in China!

Thanks Karateka, I appreciate your response. I am extremely interested in how different people and different groups do things.

Some groups that work with a lot of younger children have inserted katas even before the Taikyoku's.

And yes most Okinawan styles call the same katas Pinan as Japanese styles call them Heians. And sometimes the order of the first and second katas is different.

At my previous club (when I was a youthful 6 year old) we started with Taikyoku Shodan.

At my current club, we do the same kata, but call it Kihon Kata

I' ve never learnt Taikyoku Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan or Rokudan

We start with the Taikyokyu kata we have 6 of the basic kata the first 3 i belve are the same as the ones Funokoshi created . we then follow those with Tenno (fukigata ichi ) and Chino (fukigata ni , gekisai dia ichi ) . then we start with the pinans and you are correct the first 2 pinans and heians are switched ie... pinanshodan is heian nidan and pinan nidan is heian shodan ....

in our dojo ( Gojo Ryu) we are taught the taikyoko ( jodan, chudan, gedan) first, as they involve the basic stances, blocks and punches which are vital for a beginner to learn..... :karate:

We were taught taikyoku shodan first. After that we got to the pinan (heian) series without doing taikyoku nidan or the others. Guess it would have been a waste of time :-?

In our dojo we start at the 10th kyu level wearing the white belt, but having to earn it. Thus the 9th kyu has still a white belt :)

For the exam to the white belt to the other white belt (with a superir rank though) we have to perform taikyoku shodan.

Afterwards the heians.

For myself it was OK, because heian shodan is a little more difficult and knowink taikyoku shodan was helful. I remember I had some problems with tettsui :)

Hope I've helped a little here :karate:
