shotochem Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 Hi Guys, As you all know by now Im a Shotokan guy. I have been put in a couple choke holds by my grappling friends. I can't figure out how to get out of the triangle choke? (guy is behind me standing up or Im flat on the ground ) Ive been in a couple where Im standing and facing my opponent and Ive been able to escape with a strike to the ........ or taking him down and landing shoulder into his solar plexus. Still I cant always get out of it. The one from behind I cant get out of at all. Im not up on all the grappling terminology so I hope you understand what Im babbling. Pain is only temporary, the memory of that pain lasts a lifetime.
WolverineGuy Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 Ummm...I'm not getting what you're saying if you're standing up and he's behind you. An arm triangle? Or do you mean a rear naked choke? Go to https://www.bjj.org and give us a pic, please. Wolverine1st Dan - Kalkinodo"Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a q-tip""There is no spoon."

hobz Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 I got nothing for the rear naked choke, pretty much if he's locked it in you're screwed. All you can really do is try not to let him get his hooks in, and then use force to keep him from getting his arm tightly around your neck. As for the guillotine choke, I was told that to "get out of it" what you really need to do is just cause a stale mate. You just get up on the balls of your feet, and stick your butt really high in the air. It's worked for me. Rule #1: Play the game to the limit. Damn the consequences.
kenpo4life Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 Rear naked is easy. As soon as you feel his arm snaking your neck, tuck your chin. Then Use your hands to pull down on his arm. Your hand position should be like doing a pull up. Turn INTO his body so that you do not expose your neck.IF he is using his right arm to choke, turn toward your right armpit, (and his) If my survival means your total destruction, then so be it.
Treebranch Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 What about using some strikes? Your hands and legs are free aren't they? Another way is drop your hips and walk in little circles and if your fall keep turning. It works pretty good. The striking works until he gets his hooks on me, once he's locked It's just about impossible to get out. So far my best defense is not to get in that position in the first place. WolverineGuy Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 I agree with kenpo4life about the choke defense...you have to get it in your head that anytime you feel something coming near your neck, you tuck your chin down and to the side. As for guillotine...if he has one of your arms locked in there, as long as he doesn't put you in his guard, you should be able to use the trapped arm to leverage enough room to breathe, if not escape. If they do it standing, put both your hands on his hips and push off to keep him from being able to compress your neck. You can roll backwards from this position and flip him over your head as well from here. Wolverine1st Dan - Kalkinodo"Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a q-tip""There is no spoon."
Treebranch Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Yeah, but a strike might be enough to create a little space to position yourself for an escape. You can strike back with your hips and create space and drop in there and flip him. You can also step around him then get your hips under you. He will either let go because you have his balance or you will right on him. Believe me it works, all the wind will be knocked of them. All I'm saying is your weapons are free use them for something. Stomp the foot, create space. Mule kick the groin, create space. You see, lovely. ZR440 Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Yeah, I kinda agree with Treebranch. If you can push his hips back with your behind and then step behind him, you can then reach around and up to armbar under their chin. Depends how tight their grip is, but it usually works with those who don't know what you're doing. This can also be applied when in a bearhug. It's happy hour somewhere in the world.
