This may be a silly question, but has there ever been situations where a persons hands are considered deadly weapons?

Like in a court of law or something like on con air?

Also are some martial arts restricted by law in some way by not allowing instructors to teach certain things?

OR is this just all mysticism and hollywood?

Thanks.

I think back in the day (I say 'back in the day' because I have no idea when, heh) you had to register your hands as a "deadly weapon" if you had a black belt.

There have been topics like this before. So far I think everything has amounted to *.

This is a popular myth brought on mostly by hollywood's glamorization of the martial arts. I've read that this misconception was most likely started back when martial arts were first receiveing wider coverage in the media (probably late 40's - early 60's - my best guess). ANyhow, the article went on to state that the only folks who are required to "register" are folks who become licensed professional fighters (ie. Boxers). I don't know if this also applies to professional MMA fighters but it seems to me that it would.

In any legal situation, you have to prove that you used "reasonable force." For martial artists, you have to prove that you HAD to use whatever you did use in order to escape. That's the law. There is no registering of any kind for anybody.

The article is ignorant journalistic B.S.

Unfortunate, but still very common. It is the responsibility of a journalist to either 'quote' someone else's statements, or to verify anything being presented to them as fact. However, many journalists are lazy and simply don't do their homework.

That's a Hollywood myth.

I dunno if this is true either, but I've been told that if you're above a certain Dan grade in Japan you have to register with the police.
