New Kumite Rules

Recommended Posts

If anyone knows anything about the World Karate Federation (WKF), they know that they have dirastically changed the rules of Kumite. I was wondering what anyone who knows of these rules thinks about it.

Hey

I've heard about these new rules, but I dont now much about them.

If my memory serves me correctly, its something to do with Ashis-counter for 5 points, and theres no half-points anymore.

But anyway, when I referee I will still us traditional half-points/ippons.

C ya

All tournaments are going to use those rules in 2002. Basically you have 1 point, 2 point, and 3 point techniques for Kumite. There are no more half points, new colours, and there are new ways to get three points that they allow. You can go to http://www.wkf.net and search for the new rules or you can go to http://bibsan.com/wkfrulesENG.zip to download them in english. If you read them, give me your thoughts.

I have only read the kumite rules (23 pages is a bit much). I believe the new rules are designed to allow better scoring for more difficult techniques. It also will make bouts a bit longer (statistically speaking), with the possibility of 5 single point scores instead of 4 halves. I also like the 3 points for tsuki (punch). Many competitors seem to have placed an emphasis on kicks. Perhaps because you don't have to enter the range of all four weapons. Now good blocking or countering is essential for the big points.

I also like the part now you can do any kind of take down when a karate technique is placed before it. So you can block and then grab the guys head and rip it down. That is sweet. The only thing is, no throws above the shoulder. It is kind of a drag, but hey, can't have everything
