MunkyBoy
hello all! much of the discussion around here concerning how well arts are suited for certain issues mainly regard fighting against other artists of specific kinds (such as strikers, grapplers etc...). i do not fear to get into trouble with a pro wrestler or a karate master or whatever... what i want is to be safe from the threats of a western street -> muggers and dudes that do not know what to do with their time so lest beat up some dude. so what art would you recommend for such issue. what the art should have: roughly cover all/many ranges of fighting (a throw or two would be good plus elbowing, strikes and such). it should not take a life time like certain kung fu styles. i am not full of prejudices like "traditional arts suck" (or "modern arts suck") so any advice will be ok. since i am a so called intellectual person (going to university soon and becoming academic and stuff) i dont want to do an art that includes getting beaten up during class like hits on the head and such... hope you can help me out... Mc. Steve
My MA seems to match your description, ish. It's a striking art and we mostly train with the rules of point sparrin (above the waist, no punching to the head, no elbows, knees or grabs) but we do cover the other aspects in the form of one-steps. Some argue these are no good, because an attacker is not going to stand still whilst you do a block follow by 3 punches, chambering your fists each time, but using a little common sense it shouldn't be hard to adopt these to certain situations, but thats not to be discussed here, you'll be able to find many threads arguing this fact. delta1
Anyone who requires a safe way home from Discos (John Travolta 70's style) deservers a good thrashing to knock some sense into them Hey, Disco, DUCK! ... what i want is to be safe from the threats of a western street ... what art would you recommend for such issue. what the art should have: roughly cover all/many ranges of fighting (a throw or two would be good plus elbowing, strikes and such). it should not take a life time like certain kung fu styles... since i am a so called intellectual person (going to university soon and becoming academic and stuff) ... American Kenpo As intellectual as it is physical. Designed primarily for the Western streets, though it also stands up extremely well to other martial arts styles. Adaptable to both the stylist (you) and to the opponent you face. Has an extensive arsenal of natural weapons. Covers all ranges, including stand up grappling and throws. Enough to study for a lifetime, but I personally know yelow, orange and purple belts who've used their skills to come out on top of some very seriouse street encounters- including weapons assaults and multiple opponents of the baddest sort. Only problem area I see; "i dont want to do an art that includes getting beaten up during class like hits on the head and such." Every once in a while you will have to take the hits. Otherwise, and this applies to whatever art you do, my advice is to keep it off the street. If you can't perform under force in a controled environment, you aren't going to be able to do it in the real world. Freedom isn't free!
DLopez
Okay, since we're tossing out MA's for consideration, here's the one I take: Kuk Sool Won Covers hand striking and kicking techniques, along with self-defense techniques of joint-locks, throws, and pressure point attacks. Emphasis is placed on body conditioning, so performing forms (hyung) correctly is also an integral part of KSW. I think KSW forms are some of the most beautiful forms I've seen, BTW. Later, as you advance in rank, weapons training is part of the standard curriculum, not some optional extra cost. And yet, even further down your journey in KSW, healing arts are taught (accu-pressure, accu-puncture)! I don't know about your requirement that it not take long to learn self-defense techinques though... You might be able to learn a couple techniques quickly, but mastering any technique so that it's employment is automatic and reactive, not something you must think about, takes years of training. Otherwise, if you insist on something relatively quick, you might just consider taking classes to obtain a CHL if it's available in your state/country. Icetuete
dont make fun of him guys - i dont want to get hit either... at least if i dont have to although i think some sort of sparring is necessary if you really want to prepare yourself for an encounter. but do not get me wrong: in every fullcontact style, you wont START by getting pushed into a ring with an advanced student who is then going to beat you up. you start by learning techniques and getting ready for sparring and after that you are going to get hit on your head j/k
ramymensa
I kind of understand him. I'm not willing to be punished (kicked and so on) because I've made a mistake. Punish me (push ups ...) if I'm lazy and unbehaved. Otherwise just teach me and leave me alone. Being called stupid and idiot is not good, too. Because I'm a 25 years old female (teacher and college graduate in just 2 months) and with a high IQ. So I wouldn't recomend anybody to treat me disrespectful. For the other problem ... take kickboxing, muay thai and similar styles. Or just get a GUN. World Shotokan Karate
