WolverineGuy Posted April 9, 2004 Posted April 9, 2004 Triangle chokes are one of my favorite techniques, so here goes: 1. Bite the guys stomach/lower abdomen area. On the street they aren't going to be wearing a heavy weight judo gi. If you have enough room to wriggle up and bite anywhere on the guy applying the choke, he doesn't know what he's doing. The choke is VERY tight, and your own arm is in front of you, blocking your way (unless you have a very long jello neck) 2. Take his right hand and oull it back under himself (looks easy enough) and grab the guys testicles. Not sure exactly what you mean by that...however, the guy putting the choke on has his hands LOCKED on top of your head pulling down. As for grabbing the boys downstairs...while POSSIBLE, its not likely. you don't have a lot of leverage to strike them either, although striking would be more effective than trying to grab. There just isn't enough room. 3. Get his feet under him and lift the guy up as far as he can (won't be able to go fully erect) and body slam him down on the the floor (preferable on a chair or rock) as hard as he can. Now THAT is an effective counter...if you can get the leverage to lift a guy off the ground that is hanging on to your head for dear life. Keep in mind though, if the guy knows how to do a triangle, he also knows what to do if you stand (like let go, or flow into a sweep, or a flying armbar) 4. Left hand and eye gouge or claw at his face/throat. Possible, but not likely. The arm under the head is leveraged in TIGHT and shouldn't be able to move, and the one outside of the choke simply won't reach. 5. Possibly take his right knee and start hammering to his testicles. Nope, there is no physical way your knee will reach his testicles. Although ramming into his spine might be an option...this isi difficult, but not impossible 6. Reach up and grab a finger or two and pull real hard. Not allowed in competition, but a VERY good street counter. Just watch out for an armbar if you do try it. 7. Sit and wait..his leg will tire and he will have to let go in 2 minutes or so. If you're in this choke for longer than 8 seconds, you'll be dead. While I don't think the person would hold on to it after you were out, please never try this. I can't see where this is actually a "choke" as there's nothing pressing against his throat except your stomach, which won't do it Rather, it looks more like a head lock. This is a blood/air choke. Your arm presses against your own corotid artery and throat, and his legs are around the other corotid artery. Probably more of an air choke, to be honest. The hands on the back of hte head provide a TON of leverage and stop the air flow instantly. I can see where you'd get the misconceptions by looking at it, but talk to anyone that's used it or been in it, it's a VERY easy technique to lock on, and very effective. Shorinryu Sensei Posted April 9, 2004 Posted April 9, 2004 I don't know guys. Keep in mind that all I have to go on with this technique is that picture, but this is what I see when I look at it. 1. Clearly, the guys right arm is not tied up and is running under his body with no weight on it and appears to be easily pulled out to use in his defense. 2. The bottom guy's right leg runs along the shoulder blades of he guy on top, not aroudn his neck. As such, and his head being pulled down to the chokers chest, I can't see how the blood or airway would be choked off. 3. The guy on top's left arm is clearly and easily able to reach up to the bottom guy's head to claw, poke, whatever the guys face and throat. 4. I see no reason why the guy on top can't gnaw a big chunk of flesh out of the other guys stomach. Anyway, like I said...all I can go on is the picture, and that's what I see. It's late and I have to hit the sack. Big day tomorrow. To be continued! lol Nite all. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. Reklats Posted April 9, 2004 Posted April 9, 2004 http://members.aol.com/nyjiujitsu/triangle.html Maybe that illustrates it better. 1. The right arm does get tied up (in the first picture) and its easy for the bottom guy to use one hand to keep it there if necessary. 2. The thigh of the bottom guys right leg is against the side of the top guys neck. The top guys own arm is against the other side of his neck. 3. Its harder than it looks, especially because bottom guy can use one hand to defend, or use his hips to move the top guy around. 4. There's a little space, I guess it depends how big of a gut the bottom guy has.

Hmm...I guess the best way for you to understand what's up with the arm (trust me, it ain't movin) is to actually get into the choke. From the picture, I kind of understand where you're comin from, but I've been locked in this choke, it's tough to get out of (although my master instructor escaped mine last night...I didn't have his arm QUITE far enough under his neck to strangle him). On a personal note, my master instructor said last night was the best he's ever seen me grapple. And I thought I was having an off night! Woohoo for me! SBN Doug Posted April 9, 2004 Posted April 9, 2004 I didn't see the choke either until someone demonstrated it on me. It's just as effective as a rear naked choke. Also it's hard to see because they're both wearing white gi's, but the guy on top has his own arm lodged across the front of his throat, and it's very hard to dislodge. I'll have to take your guys word for it, as I don't study it. However, when I was doing some training with a BJJ guy, he demonstrated the triangle with my choking arm up through his legs, not below them. He was actually pulling my arm up his torso, hooked his legs, and locked me into place. In that position, my own arm both choked me, and kept distance between my teeth and his body.
