Shorinryu Sensei Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 And trying to get it back somewhat to a martial arts theme...there are many, many professional sports atheletes in football, baseball, basketball, etc that are practicing martial artisits. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
Bretty101 Posted April 8, 2004 Posted April 8, 2004 Go Schumy!! I'm from Silverstone home of British motor racing! I'm not suprised if not many people know who MS is on this american dominated forum. I suspect he is more of a household name in Europe. I certainly didn't realise he did Judo. Bretty
TheDevilAside Posted April 9, 2004 Posted April 9, 2004 Aaahh, Michael Schumi It's been 4 years since I've heard that name... and that was since I moved to America (from Switzerland), so I'm not surprised that nobody from the US has heard of him. Rich_2k3 Posted April 9, 2004 Author Posted April 9, 2004 Well at the mo he's doing VERY well, he's won every race by a long margin, and he's actually made me stop watching F1 because he completely dominates. Yeah, I think martial arts is becoming more and more popular, especially in the celebrity world, it will probably become "fashionable" for celebs to practice it eventually and they'll start it up, obviously giving up when the novelty goes, damn celebs. TheDevilAside Posted April 9, 2004 Posted April 9, 2004 I sincerely hope that martial arts does NOT become so popular. Next thing you know it's going to be a clique, "goths, punks, skaters and martial artists". "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Sir Winston Churchill
Bretty101 Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 I really can't see martial arts ever becoming more popular then they were in the 70's and 80's, Thanks to Bruce Lees films. I think it was when martial arts were at there best. I've got videos of massive tournaments and huge squads of top fighters. I see martial arts popularity as a positive thing. My biggest hate though is seeing celebrities 'trying' to do martial arts in films badly. For example why didn't they get a martial artist to play buffy the vampire slaugher? (just try and find one picture on the internet of SMG doing a martial arts move!!!) and the crescent kicks celebrities try and do, who are they kidding? Bretty
Rich_2k3 Posted April 10, 2004 Author Posted April 10, 2004 Yeah I know what u mean, perfect example is The Matrix, I mean would it really hurt to get a real martial artist, instead of the totally wooden Keanu Reeves and his non exist martial arts talent. sAtelitte Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 Yeah I know what u mean, perfect example is The Matrix, I mean would it really hurt to get a real martial artist, instead of the totally wooden Keanu Reeves and his non exist martial arts talent. People who made the matrix just figured "we'll get a pretty face to do the talking and let the computers deal with MA stuff" (you can see the parts which are computer animated btw) I heard keanu took kung fu lessons for 3 months or so just before they started filming... but that probably just focused on the moves he had to do during the movie https://www.shaolin.be
TheDevilAside Posted April 10, 2004 Posted April 10, 2004 Well, usually it's because they can't find someone that can do both, acting and martial arts. So, they pick the actors, because in TV shows like Buffy the acting is more important. Now, in my opinion, I think the actress who plays Buffy is awful.. and Keanu isn't any more dynamic than a cardboard box. But, I don't know, I enjoyed The Matrix (atleast the first and second one) nonetheless. "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Sir Winston Churchill
