zerolimitii
i think i side kicked a heavy bag incorrectly, which has made my knee have some injury when i squat. i will try to be as specific as i can. whenever i "snap" my kicks (roundhouse kick for example, i kick as fast as i can and snap my leg fully extended) i get a really bad pain in my knee. the pain doesnt hit my kneecap, but kinda below where the joint is. if anyone has any clue on what it is, did u ever have it before? should i get it checked up by a doctor? and should i rest until my knees heal? Ironberg
Ouch! Firstly, it would posibly be helpful to know where the pain resides. Is it from hyper-extension? Did you put too much pressure on one of the sides of the knee. My first guess would be hyperextension, and if it isn't serious then I suggest that you ice it, wrap it, and heat it, and slowely but surely work it back to full health. If it is serious then see a doctor (but few of us can afford that). DLopez
It sounds like a hyperextension to me too. I'm surprised your instructor is letting you "snap" your roundhouse kick when not hitting a kicking bag, as there is nothing to prevent you from hyperextending your knee when you do that. I would take it easy on your knee for a couple days to see if the pain goes away, and then change my technique when just shadow kicking - use a kicking bag if you're gonna kick full speed! tommarker
I did the exact thing sunday night. Completely whiffed the heavy bag with a spinning back kick. Sounds like a hyperextension to me. I'm no longer posting here. Adios.
The Saint
I'd try some ice first and it wouldn't hurt to see a doctor. It sounds like you hyperextended it, but the worst thing you can do for it is to add heat. (adding heat will not allow fresh oxygenated blood to the soar area-for healing) "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to go to his class." tommarker
Ice and rest is about all you can do, if I'm not mistaken. If you go to the doctor and describe what happened, they will probably say "Yeah, don't do that for awhile." Let it heal. I'm no longer posting here. Adios. Shorinryu Sensei
i will try to be as specific as i can. whenever i "snap" my kicks (roundhouse kick for example, i kick as fast as i can and snap my leg fully extended) i get a really bad pain in my knee. the pain doesnt hit my kneecap, but kinda below where the joint is. My guess would be that you hyperextended the knee, possibly causing damage. One thing I teach my students is to never, never, never extend your leg or arms fully when executing a strike. Whether to a bag, the air or to an opponent because that hyperextension is not good for a joint. Over time, it will wear the joint down to the point you will have serious problems with it, or in your case, you can cause immediate damage to the joint. I teach my people to always leave just a little flex, or bend (maybe 1 inch short of full extension) in the joint at the end of the technique. Very little is needed, and it will prevent injury to your joints. My nightly prayer..."Please, just let me win that PowerBall Jackpot just once. I'll prove to you that it won't change me!"
