I thought Elvis only got a black belt in some style of Karate.

According to The martial Arts Catalogue by Emil Farkas and John Corocoran (1977!), Elvis got his BB in Chito-Ryu when he was in the Army. Later, he trained wiht Red West and Bill Wallace, who were his security guards, and was eventually promoted to 8th dan in American Kenpo by Parker.

I've heard lots of stories about Elvis being VERY proficient in Kenpo

Elvis Presly and Ed Parker were friends, and Mr Parker also did some security for Elvis. Elvis studied American Kenpo, and at one time had a Kenpo crest on his guitar. Ed Parker sent Elvis to train with a karate school taught at an Army base before he'd promote him to Black Belt. That group trained hard contact with no safety equipment, and Mr Parker knew that unless Elvis passed the muster with a group like that, everyone would say he got his rank because he was a celebrity. Elvis passed with flying colors. I don't know how high he got, though. The story used to be on the Tracy's Kenpo site, but I don't have the link any more. You could do a search if interested.

I live in elvis land - on of his teachers is here - a guy named kang rhee. From what I hear, elvis was actually quite good.

He did actually train. He had a black belt in chito ryu, and later trained with the guy I mentioned above, kang rhee. He trained with him as time permitted, for about 4 years. as far as I know, the rank given to him by parker was honorary, which seems common for stars. Remember Brian Genese? (from the series "Street Justice" and various B movies) he has a black belt in TKD, but trained in hung gar for a while and was given an honorary black sash in it.

Such a high rank would have been honorary, as Elvis didn't live long enough to attain an 8th. And he was good, as well as tough, from what I've heard. Mr Parker did give out other high, honorary ranks as well. He was trying to promote his system, which was fairly new at the time. Like I said, I know Elvis studied Kenpo, and othr martial arts. And I've heard he earned a black belt the hard way. Past that, I'm not sure what level he achieved. But the advanced honorary degree is feasable.
