kaya Posted March 28, 2004 Posted March 28, 2004 i am looking for opinions on the above arts. mainly interested in which is quicker to learn to be used effectively for self defence, but all opinions welcome on the pro's and con's. thanks
cross Posted April 14, 2004 Posted April 14, 2004 Wado teaches more strikes and the basic strikes will probably be learned more quickly. Judo on the other hand, teaches throws and grappling which may take you a bit longer to get the 'feel' for. In saying that, the best way for you to decide is to try both arts and many will agree that if you train in both they will compliment each other nicely.
G Money Slick Posted April 14, 2004 Posted April 14, 2004 It depends on if you want to hurt somebody or simply immobilize them. Judo is better for defense since your goal is to not start a fight in the first place. If your enemy refuses to be humbled......you must destroy him.
cross Posted April 14, 2004 Posted April 14, 2004 Judo is better for defense since your goal is to not start a fight in the first place. Its the same in karate.
Wado Guy Posted August 21, 2004 Posted August 21, 2004 From my experience, it all depends on your instructors. As a white belt, we were taught many effective (situational) self defense techniques along with the standard curriculum. A good instructor will teach the beginning ranks practical self defense....no matter which art.
Karateka_latino Posted August 22, 2004 Posted August 22, 2004 Go with the school who see there Art more as self defense than sport. I think both are important for overall self defense. I'd take Karate first (you can learn the strikes quicker) and then when you are ready, take Judo. Many Senseis take both styles to be well rounded.
