senna_trem Posted February 20, 2005 Posted February 20, 2005 When my mom was doing karate in Scotland there were a lot of guys who thought she was very weird for wanting to do karate and couldn't understand why she was there. Her sensei was a pretty cool guy though, it was just some of the blackbelts who were stumped. "I think therefore I am" Rene Descartes
Martial_Artist Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Yes there is.It assumed that all chinese do kung-fu. That all japanese do karate. That all filipinos do arnis. That all blacks do boxing. That all Thai do kickboxing. That all whites (particularly Irish) box. Shall I go on?There is little more annoying than hearing the assumption that because you are of a particular racial background that a certain martial art is your "people's". Or that everyone from that nation or race is versed in such art. The reality of the situation is more westerners put focus on the martial arts than the majority of people from those countries the art originated.
