racism in the martial arts

this is probably not the right place to post this topic but do you guys find now a days there is more racism in the martial arts. Please tell me waht you think

And, you are right. This will probably be moved to the politics board.

 

Prejudices and ill feelings of any kind have no place in martial arts. You have to trust your partner implicitly to allow the degree of control with many of the moves we practice. And useing a racial slur just before sparing is really not the smartest thing to do. I've been taught some good things by some very tallented black, oriental, and martial artists of other races. Also, I have a lot more respect for anyone after a hard sesion on the mats. So I'd say, if anything, there is less raceism in, and because of, the martial arts.

One bias I can think of right off the top of my head.

 

Take two men, one white one asian. Have them both train for about 50 years.

 

At age 70, which is the one with superhuman powers and an unlimited knowledge of the arts? And which one is the "dinosaur?"

I haven't ever witnessed any racism in the dojo, if anything it has pulled people who may not have been friends in everyday life together into a family. That's my experience.

This particular topic is why I left my first instructor. He was prejudiced against most anyone that wasn't white. Although they were good enough to take their money in exchange for lessons, with a healthy dose of talking about them behind their back of course.

 

I will say that he seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Thank goodness. I don't understand how people operate in today's world with mentalities like that.

That's how its worked out for me. Coming from North Yorkshire (where there is a distinct lack of multiculturalism IMO) I have found loads of good friends at my dojo in the city, many of whom are of different races. I haven't detected any racism of any kind though, every one gets on fine.

I've never noticed any racism for the short time period that I've been involved in the martial arts. If anything, I've noticed that the enveironment where I train is the most respectful and friendly place I've ever encountered.

I guess we Romanians are kinda behind it. Not that we are racist, but there are so few people of other race, that it's hard to find them. They are treated with respect and we're quite happy when meeting one, they are something new and interesting
