Bo Kata

Hi, First I am new to this forum, I am a green Belt and have been studying for just over 2 years diligently. My question llies with Matsu Higa no kon, I have just Recently Lerned this Bo kata and I love It I am wondering IF someone who knows it as well can compare notes only because I am a little skeptical as to why the sensei would teach me a brown/black belt kata, I want to make sure I know the whole kata, If you are uneasy as well I can describe what I know.

Staff can take awhile to learn. Your instructor might be giving it to you now, with the hopes that it will look good when you're required to know it.

What he showed me I was told it was the whole kata, others have told me that matsuhiga no kon had jumping and throwing of the staff. Is this right.

 

I really like this kata, it is the first bo kata, so far I have 9 openhand 1 escrima, one foreign and one bo.

 

I just want to ensure that its the whole thing.

I learned Matsu Higa no kon when I studied Shotokan, and did weapons with a Kobudo insturctor. If memory serves, I don't know of any moves where you jump, or throw the bo. I know there are several spins behind your back. There may be several versions to this form that I am unaware of, as I'm not well versed in the Kobudo arts. I was told as well that this form was considered an upper rank, maybe even BB rank weapons kata. I've also been told by others that it is a mid-level weapons kata. So it probably depends on the dojo and their syllabus. Whether it's all of the kata or part of the kata, be glad to receive it as early as you have and just work it until you feel comfortable with it. Good luck

I took Kobudo for two years and Matsu Higa No Kon was a orange belt kata for me, the 3rd bo kata I learned...and there are no jumping or throwing of the staff techniques in that kata, but there are spins behind the back.

 

Also, I doubt there is any traditional kobudo kata that has staff throwing techniques, only modified or open/creative sport karate forms do that.

yep we learn it at blue blet, also being the third bo kata taught. No jumps however many interesting spins including behind the back ones

ive touched on bo kata shisi - no - kon - sho i think ist basic kata is it correct (sorry about the spelling guys)

my intructor wants to teach me katas with the bo . and techniques i can use . but he wants a to join a group of students . who is willing to learn . and it seems like im the only one that wants to which is holdin me bacc from l;earning . but yeah i saw some in tournament competition and they where fun to look at i cant wait to learn

WARNING: Open tournament weapons forms are likely not indicative of proper kobudo technique. This includes forms where people toss weapons into the air and pirouette gracefully around them before performing triple somersaults and landing on their dainty little toesies!

 

Throwing teh bo into the air is an invitation for your opponent to relieve you of your weapon!
