Sasori_Te Posted March 13, 2004 Posted March 13, 2004 wow, that's very ethical. I don't think I like this kata, therefore I'm going to throw it out, make up one of my own and call it the same thing." Hmm. A Westerner would get slaughtered for even suggesting such a thing. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
equaninimus Posted March 13, 2004 Posted March 13, 2004 I'm not trying to discredit the Shotokan version of Sochin, which is one of my favourite kata to practice. I actually like it better than the Shito Ryu original. Not sure what that says about me as a MA. There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!
Sho-ju Posted March 14, 2004 Author Posted March 14, 2004 Shotokan sochin is one of the best kata, in any style. Rohai, Suparimpei and naihanchi are others. IMO.
equaninimus Posted March 14, 2004 Posted March 14, 2004 I love the Matsubayashi version of Rohai, and the Shito version as well. There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!
aefibird Posted March 14, 2004 Posted March 14, 2004 This is a bit of a dumb question, but is Rohai called by any other names? I know that some kata have different names depending on style, but are still basically the same kata. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." equaninimus Posted March 14, 2004 Posted March 14, 2004 Rohai exists in at least four versions (See Sells, Unante: Secrets of Okinawan Karate (2d Ed.), (Hollywood, CA: Hawley Publications), 266-267.). The Shotokan version, which seems to be based on Rohai Yondan is called Meikyo. Most styles practice variations of Rohai Shodan. Wado does Rohai Nidan.
