Jiyn Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 i think that the most easiest and simplist stance is gadambari (cant spell it) it is also a block but our sensi always has us in it whilst helping people he says it strengtens your legs Karate is like an explosion, not like paint drying!
Dijita Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 could anyone help i have been practicing katate for a number of years and have been asked which to many must be a very simple question one that i have never really thought about Zenkutsu is a stance guiaku-zuki is the strike what is guaku stance called its bugging me help would be appriciated thanx I always thought that Gauku just means striking with your opposite. That is, in Zankutsu dache stance if your left foot is forward your right hand should be out. Maybe I am totally missing what you are asking.
aefibird Posted April 22, 2004 Posted April 22, 2004 i think that the most easiest and simplist stance is gadambari (cant spell it) it is also a block but our sensi always has us in it whilst helping people he says it strengtens your legs I've always taken Gedan Berai to be the hand technique and not the name for the stance also; I've never before heard it referred to as a stance. Regarding Gyaku Dachi, my instructor occasionally refers to that stance as Gyaku Dachi, but he generally just calls it ZenkutsuDachi. As for the importance of stances, well, Shotokan karate kas very deep stances. I think they're impotant for providing a good solid base and also as a leg training aid. if you're strong in a deep stance, then the strngth you've gained in that stance will help you to be strong and solid in a higher stance, such as what is generally used in freestyle sparring. renketsu Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 I guess we all have different names for the same techniques! I would agree that gedan berai ('downwards sweep' I think it means) is the arm movement not the stance. Zenkutsu dachi can be done in three ways in my book: Hanmi - Half hips (as per normal blocks) - Turned away from target Shomen - Fully facing hips (as per basic punches) - Square on to target Gyaku hanmi - Reverse half hips (as per uchi ude uke in Heian Nidan) So my guess at this gyakudachi would be 'gyaku hanmi zenkutsu dachi' (as above from Heian Nidan) with the name shortened Andy. I would agree that gedan berai ('downwards sweep' I think it means) is the arm movement not the stance. It's BARAI not BERAI And the different names can mean only some different combinations of words in Japanese. But BARAI is BARAI, no matter how many words acompany it And I agree, Gedan Barai is the technique, not the stance (that would be Zenkutsu Dachi or whatever one wishes to use.) World Shotokan Karate
aefibird Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 I knew it was Barai, that was a typo on my part! My brain runs faster than my hands can cope with when I'm typing - they can't keep up so I often make mistakes and have to go back though and check what I've put so it 'desont rared like thisss'. renketsu Posted April 25, 2004 Posted April 25, 2004 ramymensa: I'm going to plead stupidity We northern English people have a broad accent and it sounds like 'berai' when we say it... It's also been a while since I've seen it written and just spelt it as it sounds Andy. Andy Wilkinson (Sandan)Renketsu Karate Club Senior Instructor(http://www.renketsu.org.uk)
ramymensa Posted April 25, 2004 Posted April 25, 2004 No problem We are more inclined to change the B with a P (don't know maybe it's easier) And parai in Romanian is the slang for "money". So it's quite funny when it comes like this And ... typos ... Sometimes I don't spot them until I read the post weeks from the moment I've written it. So I guess I'm worse. Not to mention that English is not quite offcial language in my country World Shotokan Karate
aefibird Posted April 25, 2004 Posted April 25, 2004 Ramymensa, to say that English isn't the official language in Romania, you speak (well, type... ) it far better than I do and English is my first language, although you wouldn't think so to listen to my regional accent!! Yay, Yorkshire rulez. "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." The Beautiful South - The Rose of My CologneSheffield Steelers!
