granmasterchen Posted March 4, 2004 Posted March 4, 2004 i forgot to mention the numerous knuckle injuries that people may get from breaking or doing things they shouldn't.... That which does not destroy me will only make me stronger
EvilTed Posted March 5, 2004 Posted March 5, 2004 Hmmm, I've been either more unlucky than most, more clumsy or both Lets see in 18 months of full-contact karate : 3 broken ribs on lower left side. 1 cracked rib next to left collar bone. Two broken toes on right foot. Most recently a fracture in my left foot from (nearly 5 weeks ago). All from sparring. Numerous sprains of the thumb almost daily Continuous sprains, pulls, sore knees (my right one is getting close to needing surgery I think) Most guys in the dojo are injured somewhere on a weekly basis. Osu! ET
Sasori_Te Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 Is this common in full contact styles in everyone else's experience? I've known several Shidokan stylists and none of them were ever constantly injured like EvilTed is talking about. It seems a bit unneccessary to me. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
trekmann Posted March 6, 2004 Author Posted March 6, 2004 That's quite a lot of injuries EvilTed, what has kept you motivated to train. Did any of these injuries force you to take time off work/study? The strongest principle in human growth lies in human choice (Alexander Chase).
ESA-Shotokan Posted March 6, 2004 Posted March 6, 2004 Not quite in the same league but the worst injuries are blisteres on the feet! Especially once they burst and all that dirt gets in there!! Ouch! I had a break away from karate due to a torn cartilage in my knee and on returning to training, getting the feet hardened again was a painful period. Only other injury I have had was a hair-line fracture in my thumb, caused by it being punched while perfroming an age-uke.

equaninimus Posted March 7, 2004 Posted March 7, 2004 Pulled a groin muscle once, major pain. Couldn't train for two months. There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!
