How do you prevent the bo from slipping out of your hand during a weapon's kata? This keeps happening to me at tournaments. Thanks.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try, and keep trying again.

Are there any release moves in your bo kata? One-handed spins? Perhaps slowing down a bit in the areas where you tend to loose your grip, or hold tighter. How about some stick-um on your hands? Kinda difficult to assess without knowing the bo kata :-?

My suggestion is that you strip your bo with some medium grain sand paper. Then apply a very thin coat of linseed oil and let it dry for a day. Repeat this process 2 or 3 more times and you will have a weapon that will feel great in your hands and not slip or stick based on the sweat on your hands.

Three more suggestions. Grip the bo with the following strengths applied to each finger:

Pinky 100%

Ring 80%

Middle 60%

Index 40%

Thumb 80%

Second, keep two hands on the bo at all times except the very beginning and end of each kata.

Third, durring a strike always have the middle palm of the hand behind the bo. Only turn it over at the very end of the strike. You will loose your grip less often this way.

Hope this helps,

The only two things that stand between an effective art and one that isn't are a tradition to draw knowledge from and the mind to practice it.

Combat canes have grooves for better grip. Here's a link with a better view. http://www.canemasters.com/Images/diam_shaft_lg.jpg

Sounds like more practice is needed. We used to do a drill practicing changine grips with a partner. One person would hold the bo horizontally in front of them while the other person would try to knock it out of their hand by banging their bo onto the ends of the bo held by the hand changer.
