Variance Posted February 28, 2004 Author Posted February 28, 2004 Thanks for the suggestions so far. Ill check out that Ryutekan place. I actually live in arlington so that would be quite convinient and could you give me more info on the machado & guy mezger school? like websites or something i can check out? As for what kind of school... Traditional vs High Profile. Im not picky as long as the instructors are good. Im trying to get together a list of prospective places and check them all out.. see what is best for me. kungfumaster Posted February 28, 2004 Posted February 28, 2004 Definetly check out the ryu kyu school. If the instructor is even a pinch as good as master taiku seiyu oyata you will become great. Im great you are not

Sasori_Te Posted February 29, 2004 Posted February 29, 2004 Mezger is a former UFC competitor trading on his 15 minutes of fame. I don't know much about the Machado school except that it's another flavor of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Do you want to compete or do you want a well rounded art for knowledge and self defense? You said, " I'm not picky as long as the instructors are good." The term good means different things to different people. I don't know what you know about the arts or what you think good is. I do know that Taika Seiyu Oyata is a well respected martial artist and a practitioner of One of the most well-rounded traditional Okinawan styles that I have ever seen. I don't believe that I've ever heard anyone speak ill of him or his skill. His personal students tend to be VERY skillful as well. I was fortunate enough to train with one of them. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
Variance Posted February 29, 2004 Author Posted February 29, 2004 well Good to me.. is well rounded. Good if not excellent in most areas. ie.. Striking, Locks, maybe a little Grappling, Initially I want more of the knowledge, self defense and fitness aspects. While right now Im swamped because of school in the future Id want the option to compete if i wanted to. TJS Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 sasori- te, you seem to be way off base...Mezger is a former UFC competitor trading on his 15 minutes of fame Wrong Guy Mezger is a King of Pancrase, UFC torunamnet Winner and a world champion Kickboxer. He is proabably in the top 10 in the world today in his weight class. You seem to be under the impression that a world class NHB school wont be able to offer "Self defense" to someone looking for it. Guy Mezger has a black belt in karate and well as extensive kickboxing and grappling knowladge...I bet he can get some descent training there. MMA stlye training can be effective even if you dont plan on competing..besides as i said earlier he offers Karate and kickboxing classes aswell.
Sasori_Te Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 I think we all know where I stand here, so I won't inflame the situation further. If you want to compete and pay top dollar doing it, I'm sure Guy Mezger and his crew would be happy to accomodate you. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.

Do you know what % of his students compete? or are you speaking out of complete ignorance on the situation?
Sasori_Te Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 To be honest I've had a serious dislike of the guy since his first UFC appearance. I can't remember the other pretty boy's name that he fought. I do remember that they had an agreement not to pull each other's hair. *L* I will not comment on this thread further unless it directly relates to the original intent of the thread. Sorry about the side line conversation Variance. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
kempocos Posted March 2, 2004 Posted March 2, 2004 I would say train with RYUTE under the OYATA lineage if you want true KARATE. If you want MMA in a sport context for competitoin then go with METZGER. I once trained in the OYATA linage and due to location can not. SASORI_TE you know I have instructor envy at this time so gloat away:) "If you don't want to get hit while sparring , join the cardio class"
