delta1
If you get one or two hits on your opponent he is already * off and is not going to want to get hit again, so his response is to charge you. I have seen this a million times and it is what all untrained fighters do, if the initial couple of hits don't go their way they immediately sense their disadvantage and charge you. This is where standup becomes quite useless unless you get lucky and catch the guy before he gets to you. Now you need a ground game. Yes, charges are common. No, stand up fighting is not useless in a charge. Footwork, evade and counter. I love chargers, they give you all that commitment and momentum to wotk with. Pushing, sucker punches, sneak attacks, weapon threats and attacks, and grabs are other common ways to start a fight. One guy might get your attention while his buds get in position to cut you off or surprise you from behind. Generally, fights either start suddenly or with an attempt at intimidation and buildup of anger/hostility/courage. But there is no one, or even most reliable script for how it will start or how it will go. Freedom isn't free!
Rich67
Rich67 you are right but ditching the * is kinda rude. c'mon...can't we have a little fun here???In my school am the leader I do all sorts of muay thai karate judo jujitsu moves no one dares to face me.Natural, in your other posts, you indicate: 1) You are 15 and have been taking karate for 7 months. 2) said you have NOT done Muy Thai http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=152035&highlight=#152035 3)said you lack in confidence http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=150499&highlight=#150499 I'm not trying to bust your chops here, but your statement sounds a little out of line with your previous postings. Try to be yourself. It's a good thing that you're a leader in your school. But a leader also has to have confidence, and also has to be honest with himself and others. Kanzashi
O.k., all you brawling guys, how do you expect a girl to fare in a fight? We're talking one who knows how to do MA against another who may or may not be trained? I've only been in one fight, when I was in grade school. Basically a cat fight, lol. What's the flow on this? 1.) If we are up against some B, just because her boyfriend strayed and blames you, how could it be handled? Please avoid the hair pulling thing. Any girl with long hair can take the pulling part, just p's them off more. 2.) Second scenario, getting accosted at night? Best defenses to take against someone who really wants to do you harm? Besides all that avoidance, don't be there, what were you thinking about taking a short cut, etc. thing. Obviously, size and physical strength are at issue. Guys will instinctively protect their 'jewels', so just assume that's out of the question, unless he's really stupid. Give me your best advice. aes
This brings up a question I have been wondering about. Is a good front thrust kick to the solar plex (sp) a usefull stratagy in a fight such as this? 43 Years oldBlue Belt (7th Kyu) Shorin-ryuRoberts Karate
delta1
aes: Yes, if it's there. No, if you plan it. Maybe, if you try to set it up. I generally keep my kicks low, to his base mostly, until I have him where I want him. Then, the solar plex is about as high as I'll usually kick. Likewise, snap kicks until you've got him set. Then a thrust to finish him. And, don't forget your hands. You may be able to contour an early strike, complimenting the angles of his stance and guard. But this will probably be a roundhouse more than a straight kick. Unless he's in a back stance- that front leg is a perfect guide to the jewels! Take 'em! Freedom isn't free! Tal
A kick to the solar plexus is easy to block/avoid unless you're very fast. If someone is charging you, a kick will not stop them unless you take their legs out or you're much bigger than they are. They will have a lot of momentum, and if they hit your leg (or your leg hits them - its all relative) you'll probably be unbalanced. A better option IMO would be to move to the side and kick their knees or groin while covering yourself with your hands. shotokan karate nidanjujitsu shodankendo shodan
Tal
kanzashi, a girl may fare good or bad in a fight, just like a guy. It obviously depends on the girl's strength and skill, that of her opponent, and any other specific conditions of the fight. The techniques you should use are the same as what a guy should use. If you are small, then you shouldn't use techniques that rely on strength. If you're big and strong, then use your strength to your advantage. shotokan karate nidanjujitsu shodankendo shodan
Sasori_Te
Kanzashi .... Here's a little story about a situation that happened to a student of a good friend of mine. She was going to college at a big Southwestern University. She walked into her apartment through the front door to go up the stairs. Three drunk guys were waiting by the stairs to have some fun with the first female to come along apparently. To make a long story short one of them ended up with a dislocated knee, another had a broken arm and the third was the luckiest and was only knocked unconscious. She was a shodan in American Kenpo. So don't go thinking that females can't take care of themselves. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.

Spookey
Gyrl Fightes! I have a homegirl who is 5'4" about 135lbs...SHE COULD FIGHT! She was not a member of a dojang/dojo, didn't join the local wrestling club, ect. She was from a tuff neiborhood, ruff upbringing, and became mentally hardened...She was femenine in her day to day activities (just a tinch of left over tom boy:)...I met her about 10 years ago...she was mean...she had half a car tire tied to the trunk of a tree with a garden hose and this was her punching bag...she would punch it and kick it (no gloves ect.) I asked her why she did this and she replied if men are "bigger and stronger" than women then I have to fight like a man! If two guys approached me (with her present) they may have thought I was out numbered (but they found out otherwise, more than once)...HARD KNOCK LIFE! en mi el corazon para siempre! hasta la dia de mis muerte...Te quiero!
