White_Tiger Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 This could be a VERY long conversation, but I will post a couple of ideas, and let others do the same. KNOW YOUR MATERIAL inside and out. That will help with your confidence. Also make sure you know the applications of the material that way you will be ready for any questions. Don't ever be afraid to say "I am not sure" when asked a question. You can always find out an answer. I have had beginning instructors just make up answers, because they didn't want to look incompetant. They looked worse when they were corrected by me or another instructor. I will check back with you to see how you are doing! Good luck!
monkeygirl Posted February 11, 2004 Posted February 11, 2004 This is just a theory, but you are probably nervous because you are afraid to "correct" anyone? If you are a top student and know your material very well, nobody can really dispute you. It happens on rare occassions, but those are usually just what we like to call "brain farts". It's a technical term. Anyway, don't be afraid of people's reactions when you correct them. If you do it respectfully, there shouldn't be a problem. Just say something like "That's a great punch, but try to extend it a little further next time", and you'll be fine. Anyone who gets upset over that is a little oversensitive. With time, you'll earn the respect of the students. Helping them individually before class, or taking a student aside and working with them one-on-one is a great thing to do. You'll gain their respect, and get to know the student. As the students start to like and respect you, your job gets a little easier. I hope that helps! Speaking in front of the class can be very unnerving for people. I never had a problem with it myself (I'm a loudmouth), so I can't really help you there. 1st dan & Asst. G95champ Posted February 12, 2004 Posted February 12, 2004 teach what you know well don't teach above you heard and you will be fine. (General George S. Patton Jr.) "It's the unconquerable soul of man, and not the nature of the weapon he uses, that ensures victory."

Drunken Monkey Posted February 12, 2004 Posted February 12, 2004 where do you train again? i'm not far from your location. we could meet and cross hands. i'm currently sifu-less and apart from my little kickboxing class, don't get much outside training. always looking for new training buddies. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
kotegashiNeo Posted February 15, 2004 Posted February 15, 2004 I think everyone is scared at first, most won't admit it though. First things first relax and realize that you are a martial arts teacher and not superman. Bottom line you are going to make mistakes don't beat yourself up over them. Secondly have a detailed lesson plan don't wing it. Lastly have fun man if you are not enjoying yourself their is a good chance no one else is Kisshu fushin oni te hotoke kokoro
