defense against a spin kick

Recommended Posts

I was sparring yesterday night and one of my oponents uses a lot of spin kicks. I could see them coming but was like a deer in the headlights when one was launched.

What is a good defense for them?

I was trying to think of a good counter move but I can't sneak a legal kick that I can think of.

I think someone once said move in close, but moving back seems to make more sense to me.

If its a hook or wheel step in and attack if its a thrust catch or shift.

I'd go with the moving in tactic. If you see him start the spin, step in and towards opponents planted foot. You can either push him off balance from here, or catch the kick at the thigh/ knee and counter from there. Backing up simply allows him to finish the kick, and be in position to attack or move at you again. The key is to take away his attacking momentum and throw him off balance, while putting you at a tactical advantage.

If he's throwing it defensively, as you're moving in, then either move in quicker, or work on not telegraphing your moves so much. A spin kick takes times to execute, more so than a straight kick, so I would guess he's reading your movements and sticking you with it as you move in. Good luck! :karate:

Good advice from rich67, my suggestions is stay still and get your guard up this is the time to use your blocks after grabbing his gi, do a davastaing blows for example axe kicks, death kick, bubble kick, inside vertical spinning kick etc.

My advice is, when you see him ready, quickly use a snap kick or a punch kick nevr do a punch or he'll have enough power to swing his legs.

But if you'd said your sensei's was doing a spin kick my advice is atyed away and try to side step guard up and prepare.

A karate punch it is like a dasvasted stick blow. Instead, a blow of Kung Was is comparable to a lash with a chain that has attacked, allaltra extremity one ball of ferro

two things i can think of...

I tend to step in towards them but off to one side, so i move behind them as they spin. ie if the kick is coming from the right side step to the left. This puts you right outside of the kicks power and right inside your opponent. Now light up their kidneys and floating ribs with some good body shots that'll slow them down.

Another thing which you must not do  is kick them in the back as they spin thats dangerous  and can really hurt them and stop them doing it  especially not with a good step through side kick.

Thanks for all the advice people.

He was using it as an offensive move and he is fast and very initimidating. As well he should be, this guy just returned from the WFMA championships with a Gold for sparring (non black belt).

I'm surprised this hasn't been asked, but what kind of spin kick?

one defense that will work regardless of the type of kick is moving in. by moving in, you jam his kick before it is able to reach it's full power. It will also make it easier for you to off balance him and throw him to the ground.

I think you call it a spinning hook kick. He might have done a wheel kick as well but it is all a blurr.
