All these nice Tekken titles are cool, fine and dandy... but would anyone care to describe what this so-called 'no-shadow' kick is?

All i've gathered so far from this post is that it is a kick that is not seen. Well, i do those all the friggin' time. The training i received in regards to this came from san soo, and is basically ensuring i kick when the opponent's attention is elsewhere, or his view of my leg is blocked, and i do not telegraph it. Nothing magical there, although some people do find it amazing... as well as amazingly simple in theory (not in application).

Name is just that a name. Many schools focus on the 'fancy fu', others just focus on teaching, learning and adapting.

True there is nothing magical about a kick. Most styles generally have the same kick, maybe just different theory and different names.

Too often as martial artists we focus on flower names, rather than the grit of a technique.

That's all there is to it Warlock. No magic and nothing fancy. It's just a kick done exceedingly well. I think Iron Arahat makes a good point too.

well, actually....

the 'no shadow/image kick' is a direct translation, from the cantonese, of the name of the type of move.

as you may or may not move, the chinese language does not work in the same way as english does and should not be taken in the same way.

also, names of techniques in chineses are more than just the name, often including an element of its essence/ideal as well as poetry.

hence, no shadow/image kick is telling you that you kick without telegraph, without forcing and without being seen.

when you want to kick, it is already done.

it is also widely taken that the most effective, quickest, simplest kick that follows these principles is the good old front kick.

AK would call that moving or attacking through a zone of obscurity. But I don't think that is what a shadowless kick is, at least not as I've heard it used. I allways thought of it as a kick with no signature. No movement in the uper body to give it away. I used to spar with a girl who had long legs, more flexability than is really possible, and perfect ballance. If you let her get in close without keeping her busy, she'd set you up and launch a kick to the head, and you'd never see it comeing. Not even a small movement to telegraph. The only 'shadow' you saw was the shadow of doom just before the foot connected. That is what I think of when I hear the term 'shadowless kick.'
