10 Step Program for Getting Your Own 'Style'

1. Pick a system.

2.Learn it completely and as well as you can.

3.Out of what you've learned, pick what works best for you and really concentrate on that.

You now have your own 'style'.

4. Continue to learn in your system.

5.Learn from other systems, maybe even learn a complete system.

6.Out of what you've learned, pick what works best for you and really concentrate on that.

Your 'style' has improved.

7.Teach your system to others, forgeting about your personal 'style'.

Congratulations, your 'style' is getting good enough that you can re-evaluate and improve it.

8.Challenge one of the Gracies, or maybe Frank Shamrock, to a match. Or maybe walk around East LA at about 10:00PM, shouting racial slurs.

Now, you know how good your 'style' is.

9.Pick a new system.

10. Repeat steps 1-9.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes. :D

LOL delta 1. How advanced are you in Juijutsu Blaze. Personally I think one should know almost everything there is to know about a least one MA. I mean yea, you could create your own MA but how effective do you think it will be and will it be sucessful. Unless you are VERY serious about this, I think you should do it just for fun. Good luck

First I would ask you how long you've been training in another art and then I would ask why you want to make your own style. Why do you feel it's neccessary to have your own style when there are already so many to choose from?

A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.

now that I think about it....I guess you dont really have to be advanced in a MA, just know the different aspects of them. Let us know how it goes if you do decide to do it! :)

Don't rush to create your own style. If I remember correctly you posted somewhere else on the forum saying that you were getting ready to become a teenager in a couple of weeks. Which is great! If not I apologize for thinking you're someone else. You have years to learn as many MA's as you would like and then after many, many years of training you could conceivably create your own style. The style I study is Hon-Shin-Do which has roots in Shorie-Ryu but incorporates a lot of different styles that our Hanshi (9th Dan) has studied over almost forty years of being a Martial Artist. I think it's a well rounded style that has striking, kicking, grappling, throws, joint locks and lots of self defense. So don't be in a hurry to create a style, learn as much as you can while your young and able. Not to say us old guys aren't!!

Get to know a striking style AND a grappling style WELL, and train or watch several other styles at least enough to get an impression of them. Try to do some teaching so you get an idea for what works with other people rather than just personally for you.

Think about why you want to create a style... (competition fighting? self-defence? hand-to-hand combat? fitness and fun? traditional?) You don't have to have a "well rounded" martial arts style, if that's not required for your particular objective.

Look at the many different styles out there and see what else is already similar. Is there a need for your new style, or is there an existing one that is close enough to the niche you're looking at? If there is, you can learn that and save yourself the job of setting it up.

Currently: Kickboxing and variants.

Previously: Karate (Seido, Shotokan, Seidokan), Ju Jitsu, Judo, Aikido, Fencing.
