I see you list karate and kickboxing as styles. Maybe they are styles you are interested in...anyway. All schools are different. Figure out what you are looking to gain in the martial arts. For example, are you looking for competitions, are you looking to only learn self defense, etc. Once you know what you are looking for visit your local schools to see if they offer what you want.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Moved to the "Getting Started" forum.

You can find a lot of answers in here as well.

go do research off the net. Easy way to do it. Also go through yellow pages of your phone book look through that then do research on the styles. Find something that interests you. Meet diffrent instructors see which place you feel most comfortable at and feel like you can get the best learning from.

I would recommend a book called simply 'The Martial Arts' by Peter Lewis, which gives a very good overview of all of the martial art styles you are likely to come across, detailing their philosophies, training emphasis and history.

Maybe you could ask around at school/college/work (sorry, I don't know how old you are!) and see if anyone you know does a martial art. Even if you think that no-one you know does MA you might be surprised. Where I work we once had a 'fancy dress' day to raise money for charity. I went dressed in my karate gi and discovered that 3 other people where I work also do martial arts.

Try a search on google and look for info on martial arts that you're interested in. If you find some clubs in your area that sound good then go along and watch a session or two and maybe try out. Don't be afraid to ask the instructor lots of questions!!

Good luck in your search.

Tring why do you want to get into martial arts? Also, what body type are you. Are you naturally athletic and flexible? Tall? Short? Skinny? Heavy? Strong? Weak? Etc...... These are all factors as to what martial art would suit you best. Ultimately, you can do any art that you wish. You need to investigate. Go to https://www.go.com and do a search on martial arts in your area. OR, better yet, look in the phone book. Make some calls, go see some classes and question the instructors. Good luck.
