Reklats Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 What do you call a standard mat? We use disinfectant mat cleaner with a mop on wrestling mats, and the mats don't really smell... Maybe a tiny bit, but certainly not foul.
equaninimus Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 Puzzle mats are becoming more affordable, and they are easily stored when not in use. I would also suggest a collection of sparring gear, like hand/foot/headgear. There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!
granmasterchen Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 you may want to add some simple things that could be thrown together by the schools shop class, for example, a trophy case and maybe some racks to display certain belts, maybe some flags of different countries depending on the styles offered at your school. maybe some light weight dumbells to hold onto while punching, other than that the major stuff has been covered already with the mats , heavy bags and such. monkeygirl Posted January 20, 2004 Author Posted January 20, 2004 Our wrestling room smells like a barn you may want to add some simple things that could be thrown together by the schools shop class, for example, a trophy case and maybe some racks to display certain belts, maybe some flags of different countries depending on the styles offered at your school. maybe some light weight dumbells to hold onto while punching, other than that the major stuff has been covered already with the mats , heavy bags and such. Shop class? Shop class?? I go to a private school that doesn't even have wood shop...or driver's ed or home ec (which I desperately need). I never really realized our lack of shop class until now. Trophy case might be neat to add later down the road, when/if we get a traveling team to go to tournaments. What about things like ankle weights/resistance bands? Any specific brands you recommend for anything? 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
granmasterchen Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 I'm sorry, my bad, I didn't realize. You can get cheap resistance bands without spending large amounts of money too, simply go to your local physical therapy clinic and ask for some resistant large rubber bands, very cheap maybe free. Ankle and wrist weights are a nice thing to have also. Brands aren't important on these either, you simply need to find weights that stay securely to the wrist and ankle when throwing fast punches and/or kicks, it would suck for you to throw a wicked roundhouse and a 4 lbs weight goes flying across the room to crack a fellow student in the head at 35 mph...... jeffrogers Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 A big rubber ball works too. Helps during grappling when you are showing some one to roll have them lay on the ball helps keep ther body rounded them push the ball and they just roll off of it. Also helps on the sit ups really works stabllizer muscles, ab wheels are nice too. I like the sugestion about the resistance cords I would highly suggest that. It can work great for kicks punches, even throwing techniques. So your school already found instructors. Is this program part of the Physical Education program at your school. I know in Arizona they have a lot of charter schools and they bring in some marital arts program. i went to one for my Junior and Senior year of high school. I did in my last semester of school. Ed Parker Kenpo Karate. That was fun even though it only lasted me 4 or 5 months. -Jeff
Kumite988 Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 I reccomend century for the bags and pads. Not neccessarily their wavemasters for bags- they make a different kinds which may be better to use in a gym enviroment.

The MA room is supposed to be an area where students of ALL styles can practice and train on their own. Sparring isn't allowed (probably never will be), but I'm negotiating padded weapons training so people can still do their weapons forms. The major issue is that the gym's facilities provide ZERO room for kata (the basketball courts are in constant use), and the one, lightweight punching bag is in a high-traffic area. Kick it, and you immediately have to hug it so it doesn't fly into someone. Also, my school's PE requirements are different than most. If you currenty play a sport, you have to go to the gym twice a week in addition to practice 4 or 5 days a week. If you don't currently play a sport, you go to the gym 4 times a week. Each gym visit is at least an hour. There isn't a whole lot of structure to it, just a lot of freedom to workout however you want (there's usually a few faculty around if you need help). The school prides itself in having a "state-of-the-art" gym facility, so having an MA room would look really good in the brochures 1st dan & Asst. equaninimus Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 Just a note of caution. I noticed people talking about kicking and punching at full speed with weights..BAD idea. this places excessive strain on the joints and can lead to serious injuries.
