ESA-Shotokan Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 One thing that bothers me during hard kumite is ensuring my gum shield doesn't fly out? What do you people do to combat this problem? If I kiai, it has to be with teeth together or else the gumshield will hit jodan before my fist does!! Is a double sided gumshield better?
Goju1 Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 Never had a problem with this, just change your kiai for sparring (the only time we absolutely have to kiai during sparring is for gradings anyway)
Rich_2k3 Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 Just sort of growl or shout in ur breath, u dont need to kiai. "When my enemy contracts I expand and when he expands I contract" - Bruce Lee
ESA-Shotokan Posted January 17, 2004 Author Posted January 17, 2004 Hmmm doesn't help a lot as my kiai tends to throw people off a lot, especially in freestyle, so I use it to that effect. I'll have to work on something.
tommarker Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 is the mouthpiece well formed to your teeth? I'm no longer posting here. Adios.
ESA-Shotokan Posted January 17, 2004 Author Posted January 17, 2004 is the mouthpiece well formed to your teeth? Yes. If I move about and the such, it will stay in, even with my mouth open but once I go into full attack mode, it will pop out about 50% of the time, so hence a distraction.
aefibird Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 Hmm, maybe you ought to think about trying another sort. I've had to get my dentist to make one for me, as gumshields that seemed to fit really well when I wasn't sparring just lost all their effectiveness when I was going full whack. They tended to pop out unless I kept my jaws claped shut together (which is not a good thing to have to do). The one I've had made for me is great, and going to collect it was one of the few times in my life that I haven't utterly hated going to the dentists!! "Was it really worth it? ESA-Shotokan Posted January 18, 2004 Author Posted January 18, 2004 Yeah the dentist option may be the one to go for, despite it being £40!! Got to be worth a try.
Ripper Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 The thing I do, is to heat it up in hot water. It gets weak and while it is still warm I put it in my mouth so it forms to my teeth. René
ESA-Shotokan Posted January 18, 2004 Author Posted January 18, 2004 Yeah I did that with the hot water-thing but the gum shield still pops out. The one I bought had to be hot-water moulded to start.
