NEWBIE101 Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 Hey everyone. Been out of the whole MA scene for about 7 years now. I'm a former black belt and would like to get back into the swing of things. Tell me what you think of my daily training to get the basics down again. Please excuse my lack of knowledge for the names of techniques, feel free to correct me. 25 Front Punches each arm 25 Underhand Punches each arm 25 Two Hand Punch Combinations 25 Block and Punch Combinations 25 Front Kicks 25 Side Blade Kicks 25 Block and Kick Combinations I do dynamic stretching to begin with and static stretching at the end. So what does everyone think? As time goes on I will make my training more advanced with combinations, roundhouse kicks, axe kicks, etc.
Rich_2k3 Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 Are u sure u were a black belt because even though u havent trained for 7 years u should be able to remember all ur basic techniqes and the roundhouse kick which u've got down as advanced is a basic attack, even though u may not have trained for a while being a black belt means u have put years of hard work in and are an expert in ur art, if ur a BB u should always be a competent fighter no matter how many years and never forget ur basic attacks. aefibird Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 Your basic training routine sounds OK, just try adding a bit more to it as you progress. Do you practice your basics stationary or moving up and down? Maybe combine doing some on the spot with doing some basics moving back/forwards/sidewards. What martial art(s) did you used to do? If you really want to get back into training seriously again, then I'd try and find a club if I were you and train with them. Even though you're a black belt, because you've not trained for ages a few bad habits may have crept into your techniques and you might not have noticed them. Find a good instructor and he/she will help you get back into martial arts! "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..." NEWBIE101 Posted January 18, 2004 Author Posted January 18, 2004 Yea, this is just to get me back into the swing of the things. I still remember a lot of my kata's and combinations I used to do but was gonna start doing them in a couple of weeks. My main problem is that I've lost a lot of flexibility. I used to do Shaolin Kempo Karate, a form of kung-fu.
Rich_2k3 Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 Ok, well I would take aefibird's advice and join a local club, start at the bottom again, u should progress quickly as it'll all start to come back again. This way u can practice the techniques u are required to learn for ur belt and get ur basics back up to scratch. If u dont want to start at the bottom again with ur old style u could maybe try out another very different style, maybe a traditional karate style like Shotokan or Kyokushin(very good style) or maybe a Kung fu art like Wing Chun or Lau Gar, u could even try a grappling art if u want. Hoju Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 I think you'll probably find more beneift at first in the stretching part of the daily routine, to get yourself back in shape. Kicks are rather pointless if the execution is perfect, but you can't get it above your opponent's ankle. From what I've heard of people who leave training for some time & then come back, you'll be surprised how quickly a lot of things come back to you.
