Sho-ju Posted January 13, 2004 Posted January 13, 2004 After seeing Wing Chun in action, I notice that in karate we always block our center. Even in Cane Master's we protect our center. Can anyone tell me more about it?
JerryLove Posted January 13, 2004 Posted January 13, 2004 (edited) Karate blocks come well outside the centerline. Rising blocks (for exampe) end up away from your center. I'm not calling this better or worse (I like Tjikuling a great deal right now, and it does not take the "defending the center" approach); but I suspect that you don't fully understand what the "centerline approach" is in WC. OTOH, I have not seen your particular Karate art/school and could be mistaken. Edited January 13, 2004 by JerryLove https://www.clearsilat.com
wingchunner Posted January 13, 2004 Posted January 13, 2004 ...the centerline in Wing Chun or the centerline in Karate? Marty Martin Yoderhttp://wingchunner.tripod.comhttp://www.immortalpalm.com

Draven Chen Zhen Posted January 13, 2004 Posted January 13, 2004 I don't realy think that the blocking in Karate is fully center lined. I can be mistaken ... :: Bless me father, for I have just killed quite a few men ::https://www.tricking.be
wingchunner Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 ExaltedLegend- Come visit us sometime if you live near Wooster. Where are you from. As to the centerline. Of course Karate uses the centerline. It is a fundamental concept of most martial arts systems. However, Karate doesn't utilize the centerline in the same way that Wing Chun does. Have a great day. Rich_2k3 Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 Do most Kung fu arts cover this centre line concept or is this unique to Wing Chun (and JKD i suppose)? "When my enemy contracts I expand and when he expands I contract" - Bruce Lee
wingchunner Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 ... most kung fu styles will refer to the centerline. It contains the body's center of gravity, it divides the left side from the right side, most of the major organs lie on or near the centerline, and it contains the tantien (tanden in japanese) which one cultivates chi (ki) (or internal energy). Wing Chun is unique in that it utilizes the centerline to regularly calibrate the techniques used as well as the structure of it's practitioners fighting position. marty Martin Yoderhttp://wingchunner.tripod.comhttp://www.immortalpalm.com
JerryLove Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 Do most Kung fu arts cover this centre line concept or is this unique to Wing ChunYou can assume most all arts "cover" the centerline; but many do not use a "centerline approach". This approach seems most used in boxing arts (like WC). https://www.clearsilat.com
Drunken Monkey Posted January 14, 2004 Posted January 14, 2004 knowing about your own centreline is kinda useless if you aren't actively aware of your opponents centre-line and your own mother-line. post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
