Rich_2k3 Posted January 18, 2004 Author Posted January 18, 2004 (edited) Who said anything about Grapplers beating up strikers? This is about being a well rounded fighter and learning both grappling and striking, so u are a more efficient martial artist, and the fact that if u dont practice both u have a large blind spot in ur style, now I dont care how unlikely it is that u will have to use a throwing technique or a grappling technique, all that matters is that if the situation arises then u can handdle ur self efficiently, for all u know 2morrow u could be assualted and killed becuase ur attacker did somthing that ur art does not cover properly (and plz dont say that ur art covers everything because u'd be lying to ur self). As history has shown us, arrogence and being unprepared has always been mankinds weakness. Reklats Posted January 18, 2004 Posted January 18, 2004 My point is that you can fight a street fight knowing absolutlly nothing about grappling or wrestling AND win the whole thing against Joe Avarage! http://facethesky.com/fight.mpg You don't need to know how to grapple so you can flying armbar someone in a fight. If either of the first two people in this clip knew how to grapple they would've known how to attain good position on their opponent and keep it. Even if you're Mr. Bloodsport blackbelt karateka, if you get knocked over/bumped over/tripped/taken down intentionally and you end up with someone on top of you, you have to know how to escape at least.
WC-Strayder Posted January 19, 2004 Posted January 19, 2004 No, it was not trolling, but a joke. I do NOT think wrestlers going around beating up people from striking arts.... my point is that avarage joe knows more about striking than wrestling and therefor will strike, not grapple. I'm am 36 years old, I have to go to work every day to suport my lady and two kids, so you can easilly say that I have no time to cross train in two diffrent styles, but have to stick with what I see as the best alternative for defending my self. I firmly believe that Wing chun has what I need to do it and BEFORE you start flaming me thinking so I'll try to explain for you what I mean.... Where I live I can do two things to prepare my self for an attack, I can do Wing Chun, as I do and have done for about one and a half year or I can, like the most of the people does, do nothing!. What do you prefer?. What I'm saying is that you may be a more rounded fighter an all that with cross training, but you do not HAVE to do it to be good in self defence. You talk like a street fight would be like a walk in the park if you do some cross training and sure you would be sligtly better off than me, but thinking that will solve everything is dangerous!. It also depence on personal courage and a lot of other stuff to win, not just the skills you have!. Maybe you will be so scared that you got all stiff and get you beaten up no matter what you train in. I'll had a few streetfights in my life and knows my reaction to punches in the face, like what I feel when my nose was broken or the pain and lameness of a couple broken ribbs, and believe me, I'm mush better prepeared now than back then even if I don't cross train. I have the guts, the stamina AND the skill to meet some lokal trouble maker in a street fight, but I don't have any disire to do it!. So train hard and have an easy fight no matter what you train, just be prepared!. If the first lesson was a failure, then you know that skydiving isn't for you!
jeffrogers Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 I don't say it would be easy depends some times it can others maybe not. Depends on the situatioin. Actually fights I seen the guy takes a few good punches nad then goes in to tackle you. Like I said can't say you don't need it because your still weak in that area. All you can say is I hope you never fight another martial artist or experienced wrestler. Really all you can say is I am happy with what I do and I don't care to learn another art. Great! Keep doing what you do. I am glad you feel it works for you! Also most of the time if y ou stay away from trouble you can keep out of a lot of fights. I keep to my self most of the time now. I don't frequent bad neighboor hoods. Or hang around when there is obnxious people I see at the bars. So you can actually avoid alot. So probalby you wouldn't have to deal with that situation. -Jeff
Rich_2k3 Posted January 20, 2004 Author Posted January 20, 2004 WC-strayder i agree that if i had a choice of a striking or grappling art then i'd choose striking hands down, and as u say u only have the time for one, so u made a good choice, i think wing chun is one of the best arts for self defence and if thats what u want then thats fine. But u still have a weakness and although the chances are slim u may find ur self in a tricky. I've also gotta say, jeff rogers is right, in most fights if ur opponent doesnt win with the first few punches then he'll probably go in for a grab to escape urs, then u'll need it. But I suppose that at the end of the day we cant all be perfect, and different ppl are after different things in MA, ur after self defence and u dont have the time to cross train, well u made the right choice on ur art. Thats all i'm gonna say, i've gotta leave for training, and no it aint grappling. "When my enemy contracts I expand and when he expands I contract" - Bruce Lee
jeffrogers Posted January 21, 2004 Posted January 21, 2004 Actually in reality when you think about it. If your not out starting fights, going to bad neighborhoods, in bars all the time. And in general you don't act like jerk. If you aren't into fighting competion. You won't really use your skills that much. Thats both for Grapplers and Strikers. Except for the gym/dojo/dojang/kwoon/school what not. Most won't even use there skills. People do Martial arts for confidence. Thats the biggest reason people do it. They may say to gain self defense, or to get into shape, or number of reason. But it all leads or mostly leads back to confidence. -Jeff
blitzcraig Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 Joe average...hilarious. Anyways, whats the persent number of fights that end up on the ground...like 80 or something? I havent taking wrestling or judo or jujitsu, but I would love to. Even if your a great puncher or kicker, there will be folk out there who are able to take a punch or kick and then there gonna grab you....im just saying that in some cases if you dont know how to grapple or throw....you may be screwed #1"The road to tae kwan leep is an endless road leading into the herizon, you must fully understand its ways". #2"but i wanna wax the walls with people now" #1"come ed gruberman, your first lesson is here.....boot to the head" #2"ouch, you kicked me in the head", #1"you learn quickly ed gruberman"
Drunken Monkey Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 just cos i have no idea, how many schools have an extensive wrestling program? post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
blitzcraig Posted January 23, 2004 Posted January 23, 2004 Probably not many....but high schools and colleges might #1"The road to tae kwan leep is an endless road leading into the herizon, you must fully understand its ways". #2"but i wanna wax the walls with people now" #1"come ed gruberman, your first lesson is here.....boot to the head" #2"ouch, you kicked me in the head", #1"you learn quickly ed gruberman"
