Personally I practice Kata because I love trying to perfect something and it is great it has a purpose when you learn the bunkai.

Nothing is simply a "simple block" in karate. You must do the move over and over to have the muscle memory, but also to fully, and I mean fully, understand the move, not just be able to repeat it. In repeating the move, you learn what to do, what not to do, how to do it standing differently, thinking differently and understanding it differently, in any situation. That's why there are many interpretations of bunkai out there and each person can understand their own meaning of karate.
