At first I thought about making this an actual poll, but then decided that it would limit the way I write the questions/options, so I post this as a standard post.

1. Do you personally have any kind of military training?

2. What kind? (if possible, post a link to the Service Website)

3. Is it common in your country to have military training?

No military training here, im in Australia, not very common to have military training unless you are in the armed forces or reserves.

Yes, USMC, but a long time before their current MA program.

Most military training focuses on firearms and bayonet, and squad tactics.

A lot of things like sentry removal and improvised weapons (helmet, e-tool, etc.), and explosive devises. Military h2h tends to be brutal, devastating. The intent is to quickly destroy an enemy before you are destroyed. It generally bears little resemblance to what you learn in the dojo, even though most ma's were originally for combat.

1. yes, here in germany every young man has to serve in the army for at least 10 months after having finished whatever school he went to. some people dont have to, when the a doctor says they are not able or when they already joined the border guard/the police or if they have two older brothers that already served in the army.

women can volunteer for army service, but in contrast to men, they are not forced by law to do so.

2. there are different ways. you are asked you wish to do but there aint no guarantee.

in case you just want to do your 10 month service, you have a choice between Navy, Air Force and Ground Troops. (like in any other army i guess...). then there are the normal "careers" that each of them offers, nothing extra ordinary.

3. actually yes, but actually... no ;)

the law says u have to serve for your country for a certain time. but for about 25 or something, this is also possible as a help in social facilities (care for old people, help in hospitals and whatsoever...). u gotta write an essay about why it is not possible for you to hold a gun/to kill/to serve in the army, which is not really a problem. since the cold war is over and germany is reunited again there is not much need for an army anymore so the need of recruits is not so urgent like it was 15+ years ago.

There is no subscription in the UK mainly down to the fact that the armed forces in our country is a very popular career, so in terms of the size of our country we have a very large armed forces. Royal Marine Commandos and SAS soldiers are the toughest fighting force on the planet, they have to do months in the most hostile enviroments on the planet ie. Jungle, desert and arctic conditions. The SAS regiments have the hardest selection process in the world and usually only a few percent pass. There not just experts in Combat but also in the Anti-terrist role, an SAS soldier will spend hours in the killing house everyday. Flashbangs, claymores and other anti-terrorist equipment was all created by the SAS, remember the Israley embassy seige in London, that was a live showing of what they could do, all hostages saved, all terrorists dead, just a few minutes long, no casualites. Quick, efficent, deadly. I cant even begin to discuss what kind of training they do becuase theres simply to much, their trained for anything and I mean ANYTHING, their lives revolve around training; weapons, survival, tatics, paradrops (what there best at) hand to hand combat, endurance etc etc.

I trained in the USAF and worked with all the services teaching the special forces martial arts back in 1999-2000. After that i taught classes at a base that didn't have special forces. I have worked with police and such in many areas teaching martial arts for years though. I hope that answers some questions, I am currently in japan on a military base teaching martial arts and also studying like all martial artists should.

granmasterchen: How important do you feel empty hand skills are for the modern soldiers? Do you train with/among the soldiers with their other service, or are you just a martial arts instructor on the base?

*Practice is the key*: Where are you from? How long is the service there?

Kirves: I originally trained and worked in the military. Today and for the past year i have been working as a civilian training martial arts. It is not a requirement for any of the services what i offer or any of the other instructors here on the base. I do not honestly see the need as being great for the modern soldier. We fight with mostly guns from far away, and that is after we drop lots of bombs and shoot cruise missiles. We very rarely see hand to hand combat in todays modernized military. Yet there are several individuals that study the arts just for the same reason that we all do., i dont think that any one expects to use their arts in the middle of a war.
