Wado Guy
there are so many folks that simnply say that Wado is an offshoot of Shotokan. One thing that most people do not realize is that Wado Ryu is deeply influenced by Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujitsu...not necessarily Shotokan (although you will find elemts of Shoto in Wado). Master Ohtsuka earned the title of Grandmaster of Shindo Yoshin Ryu. It takes the practioner quite a while to see the jujitsu influence.
stuey-san
like many ppl have sed, wado is a lot more relaxed, shotokan or as i can only say from the experience with shotokan, everything seems really formal amd huge emphasis is put on low, strong stances as opposed to many styles of karate which are far more upright Kicking to the head is like punching to the toes
Sibylla
Well I went to a wado club last night, and the people there said that even if the technical differences in stances and katas (heian/pinan) weren't that big, I'd still had to start as a white belt. That put me off a bit. But otherwise it looked good.

Walking into a different system and demanding to wear one's rank is the utmost of rudeness. There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm! Sibylla
I didn't demand anything, I just asked. And I know that some karate styles where allowed to keep their grades if they changed to Shotokan. So I was thinking that it could be the other way around. I think it depends more on the instructor and club, rather than the style. Some instructors recognise previous grades, some don't. Just out of interest, Sibylla, why are you wanting to move from Shotokan to Wado-Ryu? "Was it really worth it? Only time and death may ever tell..."
