Judo Warrior
Hey guys, I know i've been posting a lot about choosing a martial art, but now i'm serious!, The choice for me is between Judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu(aka.Traditional). Which art is more effective for self-defence? I know Judo won over TJJ when they had the big tournament between both arts. Do one or both of the arts have weapon training(I don't care that much for weapons). Please don't go off topic and mention other Ma, i only want ur help on choosing an art between judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, and most importantly i want to know which is more effective for self-defence. Thank You! - A coward dies a thousand deaths, A warrior dies but once.- No matter how strong the wind is, The mountain cannot bow to it.
Cybren
First of all, you should ask yourself if there's any Judo or JuiJutsu schools in your area. If there are, then great! Try to observe some classes or such, talk to the students. Get your own opinion, not our (obviously biased) ones.
Kirves
Which style(s) of TJJ is available to you?
Judo Warrior
There is a lot of Judo schools and Jiu-Jitsu schools near me. I'm not sure what the Jiu-Jitsu styles are though. I'm just asking for your opinion, I'm not telling you to choose the art for me. - A coward dies a thousand deaths, A warrior dies but once.- No matter how strong the wind is, The mountain cannot bow to it. Kirves
The opinion depends very heavily on the JJ style. There are so many different styles.
Kensai
Judo is likely to have more full contact Randori and hence you'll learn better technique which will prepare you for a so called 'self-defence' situation. Judo, in most cases wont cover any weapons, but then it does cover ground fighting in great detail. TJJ has many great systems, but what out for a lack of sparring. Also, if you do do TJJ, you'll need to do some Judo to get the ground fighting aspect. Unless your lucky enough to find some Kito-ryu, or Shinkage ryu, but there not big even in Japan. Judo Warrior
I talked to one of the sensai's of one of the jiu-jitsu schools and he said he teaches KODOKAN JIU-JITSU, which i never heard off, adn he said it's simillar to The Jiu-jitsu in Hawaii. What do u guys think? its $65 dollars a month, so far I'm not interested in that school because first of all i don't think Hawaii has a Jiu-Jitsu style and I don't think there is such thing as Kodokan Jiu-Jitsu. So far i'm more intersted in Judo, and most of the Judo schools near me have a good reputation. - A coward dies a thousand deaths, A warrior dies but once.- No matter how strong the wind is, The mountain cannot bow to it. Kensai
Kodokan is the oringal name of Judo. It was oringally known as kodokan judo. So yes, there is a style of Kodokan, no idea about the Hawaiian reference.
Sasori_Te
The Hawaiian Jiu Jitsu is called Danzan Ryu Jiu Jitsu. The original dojo was called the Kodenkan in Hawaii. It was founded by a Professor Okazaki and some of his contemporaries. Professor Wally Jay of Small Circle Jiu Jitsu fame came from this lineage. I know several excellent Danzan Ryu practitioners and the style is excellent and also somewhat brutal. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
