Jiggy9
Okay guys - help me out I do karate and itz my core art, i'm looking for complimentary arts to improve my style...see i figure im pretty decent at the kickboxing range, im looking for arts that can help provide modern day effective methods of defense, grappling range skills and ground fighting skills.. See my number one choice would have been JKD which i did for a month, but the only teacher in the country left.... I've indulged in wing tsun, and judo as well...judo. Let me tell you something about my build and skills : Im pretty tall and lanky...i admit it, my legs are relatively quick and my punches are fast n furious, not all that powerfull though. Judo didnt suit my physiqe and style at all, but i lessons i learned were valuble in the grappling stage.... Wing Tsun and other kung fu related arts would have been good - but it's more of a brand new core art, which would take too much time to master...it is sort of conflicting with my karate based style. I do apply the ying yang theory which chinese arts are based on....i like to take things from arts and use them....but, im looking for another art which can diversify my skills.... I considered kick boxing but that doesnt offer much variety, but i wouldnt mind doing that later.. Im looking towards the thai arts?? Kali?? ANYONE got ideas?!?? Karateka
Your own karate teacher should emphasize the self defence aspect to karate moves. That is what my teacher does. Ask him or her to go over a lot more stuff. I find that a lot of people don't even ask their instructors before they just leave and go somewhere else. Angus
I did a bit of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to help round out my techniques on the ground. I didn't do much cos i'm primarily a striker but u HAVE to have some experience in the grappling arts if u want to be a serious fighter these days. Gloi
I do shotokan and when I fancied trying something else to complement the karate training I thought I'd go to an aikido class. Although due to a clash of times I no longer go I found it really interesting. It helped a lot to see the applications of a lot of the moves in the shotokan katas. hanksohn
Definitely BJJ or something similar-catch wrestling or the like- is a good idea. Kali is solid and will build your speed as well. Plus found my Japanese and Korean knife training to be woefully lacking compared to the FMA stuff.
Joecooke007
I've got the perfect thing for you! It's called chin na and it's a complimentary martial art. It is all about ground fighting holds and pressure points. It is swift and lethal, look into it. Boards don't hit back. -Bruce Lee
