Is Karate effective when used as self-defense ?

Drunken Monkey has pretty well summed it up. If given a choice, I would prefer not to fight at all. If I have to fight, a firearm or a long stick would be nice. If I am unarmed, I accept that I am going to get injured in the course of the encounter. Onaga Yoshimitsu (Shorin Ryu) has a saying that I find particularly appropriate:

"Ti (karate) is not about winning (tournaments), but about not losing (in self defence encounters)."

There have always been Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm!

Hmmmm..... sounds pretty familiar.

Didn't Funakoshi say the same?
