Bretty101
Hi all, I stuck this in the general martial arts because i'm a mix of several styles and could do with all the help i can get. I'm predominantly a very side-on kicker (tkd style lead leg kicker, a bit like Bill wallace) and have really been concentrating on my hands/ boxing. I've done Kickboxing, ordinary boxing and Thai boxing. All of which get my hands going and make me fight very square on (all good so far). I'm comfortable going from side-on to square-on, but really struggle to go beyond square to deliver a good cross or reverse punch. I don't know why, i feel really committed and immobile when i throw it, as well as being a bit slow and ffeeling a bit open. I really do feel i'm lacking a good cross and my rear hand very rearly gets 'thrown'. Can anyone offer any advice, drills or good combos for getting my cross going. I'm a big guy and think it would be a great technique to have. Help?!! Thanks! Bretty
Bretty101
Is it my footwork? should i go onto the ball of my foot on my rear leg? Am i trying to 'over' throw it? I can't help but feel i'm sticking my chin out when i throw it??? Help!
WolverineGuy
I've never really thought about it...my right cross came fairly easy to me, thank God. I keep my chin tucked, left hand up, and on the ball of my rear foot. Snap it out, make sure to snap it back. delta1
...i'm a mix of several styles. I'm guessing your problem is more positional- you are facing your opponent more squarely, whereas most martial arts face him at more of an angle, typically about 45'. With the more square on stance, your cross might tend to travel more across your body, which would upset your structural allignment and your ballance. It would also cross your arms and severely overextend past your centerline. Try steping in and turning your body more as you deliver the cross. This will better align you for the strike, and you won't be throwing your arm so much across your own body. The step in will also add power to the strike, and the position change may disorient /disrupt him momentarily, especially if the cross is a followup to anothe strike. You might also get the desired angle with a stance change. Hard to say from just a post, but I hope that helps some. Freedom isn't free!
Sasori_Te
Yeah, what delta 1 said. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
Kirves
Too little hip rotation. If you are facing the opponent with your left fist forward, you must concentrate on a sharp, very strong hip rotation while the rear foot turns too, onto the ball of the foot and knee pointing forward and down. Do this rotation strongly enough and your right fist flies to the target (in front of you) almost by itself.

WolverineGuy
Its amazing how some of you can analyze that from a post. I'm such a visual person...oy. That's why I'm all about martial arts books that have full color vivid pictures...I can't do anything with the black and white cheap pics that don't have enough detail. doesn't help me at all. Kirves
It helps if a) you have had the same problem, or similar problem b) you have taught people and noticed they had a similar problem c) both
