WolverineGuy Posted December 14, 2003 Posted December 14, 2003 I subscribe to a bodybuilding forum, and some guy started a topic on what was better: kickboxing or jiu jitsu. Of course, it turned into a big flame war...but I tried to be the voice of reason, and then I got flamed. People saying that Judo and Jiu Jitsu wouldn't work in a real fight...oy veh. I'd like to see one of them meet up with a practitioner of either art. Wolverine1st Dan - Kalkinodo"Shut up brain, or I'll stab you with a q-tip""There is no spoon."
pvwingchun Posted December 14, 2003 Posted December 14, 2003 I have always said bad kickboxing, good jiu jitsu, jiu jitsu wins. Bad jiu jitsu, good kickboxing and kickboxing wins. The same can be said for any combination of arts. And then sometimes being good has nothing to do with it, it is luck and how things fall in your favor. Although we all take arts we believe in sometimes all the training in the world won't help if the other guy is lucky, or has a gun. But you are right usually those spouting off the loudest about how they would or have whipped someone who is supposedly a good fighter with years of experience in a proven art are the ones who don't have a clue. It is not really about ignorance but preconcieved notions of what works in a real fight on the street. Wing Chun Kuen Alliancehttps://www.wing-chun.us
WolverineGuy Posted December 14, 2003 Author Posted December 14, 2003 Big bump on that...I just don't believe in saying one art "sucks." EVERY art has SOMETHING to offer in a self defense situation...some handle it better than others, but every art has a unique and effective way of handling these situations. kempocos Posted December 15, 2003 Posted December 15, 2003 I agree , I know guys at the gym who believe that being able pump massive wieght means they can fight and know more about it. I just say K1 , SAPP VS BORJANSKY 350LB MUSCLE BOUND SAPP learned a lesson about well trained and speed. A painfull one at that. "If you don't want to get hit while sparring , join the cardio class"
aefibird Posted December 15, 2003 Posted December 15, 2003 I agree , I know guys at the gym who believe that being able pump massive wieght means they can fight and know more about it. About 8 months or so ago we had a big bloke join my dojo. He was into bodybuilding bigtime and loved showing off his huge muscles (actually, he just loved showing off - he's a bit of a j£rk.) Well, we were doing some freestyle sparring one day and sensei paired him up with this man who's a couple of belts higher than him but who is small and quite skinny. Muscle guy just laughed and obviously thought he could paste Martin (small guy) into the ground. But because Martin trains a lot and is small and light he made 'mincemeat' of muscle-man's defence and attack. Muscle guy didn't like it one bit! It just goes to show that it's not all about having enormous muscles. I hate it when people start bad-mouthing other arts, especially if they have had no training or knowledge of them. Like WolverineGuy said, EVERY art has something to offer and having different arts is quite a good thing because we're all different and what suits some people wouldn't suit others and vice versa. That's why we don't allow Comparative Styles threads to turn into "which is better" arguments...eventually, even the most reasonable person will get shut down and flamed. Which just plain isn't fun or productive. 1st dan & Asst. Instructor TKD 2000-2003No matter the tune...if you can rock it, rock it hard.
