overkill Posted December 10, 2003 Posted December 10, 2003 I have seen first hand experience someone who had been taking wing chun for about 5 years, beat a 3rd degree black belt in TKD (a instructor ). Granted I was only 18 years old at the time and about 145 pounds. He cracked my rib in the first time sparring with him. He was built similar to me lean and short. I was a bit taller. Looking back he probably was going to schools to show off his WC. But a first impression is a lasting impression. I was very impressed with my first KF encounter. He took lessons for about 6 months at TKD. He had everyone taking lessons from him by the end. I could see WC being very useful in say bar situation or a club you know were it is very crowded.
TJS Posted December 10, 2003 Posted December 10, 2003 There is a video somewhere of a kid with absolutly no training Beating a TKD black belt by kicking him in the balls...great stuff...especially since the TKD guy was trying to show off. sorry...that was a bit off topic but i just remebered it.
overkill Posted December 10, 2003 Author Posted December 10, 2003 LOL thats some funny stuff. I don't take TKD anymore, and never would again. The school I did attend was probably one of the better run ones that I have seen. They also offered hapkido. At the time I didn't have access to any other schools other then a zen do kai class that ran twice a week.
pvwingchun Posted December 10, 2003 Posted December 10, 2003 I could see WC being very useful in say bar situation or a club you know were it is very crowded. Exactly the closer the better. Wing Chun is known for closing the gap getting in close and taking away the long range weapons. Quoted from another thread. If my effective range is greater than his, and he stays out of my range, how on Earth is he going to hit me?Precisely the point you either stay out or get in, there is no in between, bridge the gap and make short work of your opponent and if you are out of range there is no fight. We tell our students Wing Chun could fight in a phone booth (exageration but makes the point) and much of that is due to the development and history of Wing Chun. Drunken Monkey Posted December 10, 2003 Posted December 10, 2003 well, maybe not phone booth. sometimes you wanna take a little step backwards to pull them into you.... post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are."When you have to kill a man it costs nothing to be polite."
Viontro Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 I see Taekwondo as a sport, where you go to tournaments and fight using those unrealistic high-kicks. I think that if you want to show off your TKD, you make advanced flying-kicks. In Wing Chun, when you want to show off your WC, you beat someone to the ground in 3 seconds.
martialartsresearcher Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 wing chun is cool. if only the closest wing chun school wasen't at 79 street,VA. shoot : ( any ways, see ya.
delta1 Posted January 20, 2004 Posted January 20, 2004 Better watch out, guys. Pride and overconfidence has been the downfall of many a warrior! Not all TKD is the sport variety. TKD does have in close skills, and they are introduced to WC centerline theory in their first one step. And not all TKDers are high kickers, or even primarily kickers. Remember, a lot of people disrespect WC, right up until they end up facing someone who knows how to use it. Just a thought. Freedom isn't free!
Darth Paul Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 I've done TKD since 1996 and it can be very effective in the hands of the right person. I've added Wing Tchun to my arsenal to help where I was weak-up close with my hands. A good WC guy will take a bad TKD guy every time. A good TKD guy will take a bad WC guy every time. To be an effective fighter you need to be prepared to fight in all ranges and that may mean gaining a firm foundation in one style and then adding others. No one traditional style will address every situation.
Viontro Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 Dart Paul: "A good WC guy will take a bad TKD guy every time. A good TKD guy will take a bad WC guy every time" ...And a bad WC guy will take a bad TKD guy every time I just think that in most TKD-schools you learn the sport-kicking thing. If you take a WC and a TKD student that both have trained for about a month or two, I´m pretty sure that chances for the WC student to win over the TKD student with no rules are bigger than the TKD student´s, don´t you?
