Yeah, perhaps not.... I'm sorry but i don't see how SPORT TKD would fare very well against the stuff i've learned. At least not the wayi saw it in the Olympics..

Stay kool

Olympic style rules are absolutely stupid. I fought my brother, who was 8 years in TKD and I was 2 years in Muay Thai at the time, and beat the crap otta him (not literally). He kept saying that I was cheating because I would grab him and move him off balance to punch and kick. Oh and my punching his face was cheating too. Olympic TKD is unrealistic as far as self-defense, but it's a hard sport, I guess.

It is just sport guys. They have to show the public and the IOC that people can walk away. The rules are there because they have to promote safety. A lot of people realise this, but some people who go into the Olympics are there to kill people. That is why it is important to learn control and follow rules.

On a personal note; I don't particularly prefer TKD either.

true; sport is sport and it is for show.........especially olympic sports......same goes for judo / wrestling / track and field / boxing / et.al.

olympic sports are for bringing all countries together unpolitically. at least thats what it's supposed to be.

Sport is sport, but TKD still looks silly, IMHO.

Heh, yeah, good one Conan...

True, sport is sport - but the sport TKD has damaged the reputation on the art. I personally would not take TKD as it doesn't offer what i'm looking for.

If i had a son or daughter i'd probably put them into BJJ.

Olympic Tae Kwon Do may look silly, but i exude confidence on the street! I dont think people(if they chose to challenge me) would be even considering how silly i looked after i was done with them. After all, it is a self-defense. Dont get me wrong, im not trying to act like a tough guy, but id say TKD will suffice if it ever comes to it. Thank you sirs and ma'ams.

Not olympic TKD as it stands. Olympic TKD specialists don't seem to deal with punches to the face, grappling, kicks to the legs or anything outside of the "strike zone" that are the rules of TKD. I've sparred with olympic TKD fighters and all I did to beat the was to give them a bear-hug and they were stunned, frozen and didn't know what to do.

How is this a good self-defense method if they can't deal with the most basic of grappling, which comes natural in most fights?

It's a very limiting sport that definitely needs cross-training outside of the sport to be effective in the streets.
