Thought i would write some information about the basic defences in boxing..(this also applys to some other martial arts)

Once the boxing defence is mastered is it can protect the practicioner from almost any hand strike from almost any art.

Evasion:

Evasion is basically ducking and weaving.

Some evasion techniques include the right/left duck, inside/outside weave and backward weave. These techniques involve moving your head and sometimes body out of the way of your opponents attacks.

Covering:

Covering is used to protect the head and body from attacks, covering uses mostly the arms and gloves/hands.

Some cover techniques include the high front/left/right cover and the low left/right cover. These techniques involve holding your arms close to your body/head and absorbing the blows on your arms.

"Rolling with the punches" is a technique often used to further absorb the blows when covering. It involves moving in the same direction as the punches are going.

Parrying:

Parrying is similar to covering, the difference is that parrying changes the direction of the blows rather than absorbing them.

Some parries include inside, outside, upper and lower. These techniques involve "pushing" the opponents arm, either from the side, the top or the bottom. Its important when parrying that you dont reach out to far or use very large movements because you will leave yourself open.

Practising:

The best way to pracitse defence is by first learning the movements and working on them individually, then putting them all together in sparring.

Final Note:

Remember you should not rely on defence alone, everytime you defend a strike you should be thinking of counter attacking and in some cases you can use a defensive move and an attack using both hands at the same time. For example, if your opponent goes to punch you, you could parry and strike an opening on the one "beat". This saves time and helps stop your opponent from throwing combinations.[/b]

Yea, it is surprising how many people don't realize that there are blocks in boxing.

Its often hard to see them clearly because of the speed they are used at, and the counters that follow them.

the only thing i could think to add is the straight counter attack- meaning when you see a hook or something coming you jab him right in the face, ruining his punch by landing yours first. somewhat dangerous and difficult, its a lot of fun and very effective though.

a broken arm throws no punches
