Angus
Controlled rage, people... controlled rage. Perhaps you have heard of this before. I have seen many a good fighter get angry and lose his timing and just swing and swing, usually ending up on the ground. I myself used to be guilty of this. That is called blind rage, what i am talking about is controlled rage. The ability to house your anger, make it your friend, make it boost your strength, quicken your blows, and numb your pain... Many people give in to the rush of adreniline and lose it. If you can learn to control yourself, focus your energy, and turn into a beast, then nothing can stop you. Just some random thoughts, Angus. Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.
Jack
Angus, I couldn't agree more... the Kiai used when punching or kicking is a way of realesing energy, and when angry controlling htem and using them through these shouts improves damage speed etc. JackCurrently 'off' from formal MA trainingKarateForums.com
Angus
Exactly... you have never felt power until you have felt your anger under your control... It's like having a demon inside of you that you can control... A most excellent feeling if you're in a conflict, Angus. Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear. Blood Eagle
Absolutely right! Most people (untrained) will sort of panic when fighting, and then suddenly they ly down with a broken nose or something...... Fear is just a feeling that you have to overcome, it cannot hurt you. Only panic is a deadly act!

Karateka
Even with controlled anger, I have felt, you lose some focus. Your energy is being directed to partially control something else. You lose concentration and you lose the fight. Again, I haven't been to a lot of tournaments but I am into fighting and am the better in my dojo. My Sensei is a fighter so I have learned a lot from him. If any of your techniques work, Great, maybe I can try them out. I am just saying that I have faught better when I am calm and don't care whether I win or not. Kickbutt
As motivation, I know from past experience that anger is definately a useful tool. Once it has helped you to overcome/bypass your fear however, I believe it has served it's purpose. Anger is usually viewed by many as a negative emotion, but like all other emotions, it is necessary in order to maintain balance in one's life. You just need to know when it's appropriate and to recognize when it's not. Ouss. Angus
Very good responses people, and i thank you all. If you have ever been in a SERIOUS fight and have had that rush of adreiline and become really angry you will know exactly what i'm talking about. The sort of anger that comes about from watching a loved one being threatened, this is true power. The feeling of losing something or someone just takes you to the next level... I will eventually have to subdue my anger but hey, i aint perfect yet. YET! Taesujutsudrw
As I have stated before..I have been in serious fights. The one who gets angry in the street is the one who ends up DEAD. It is the cool head that wins..not the angry one..controlled or not. Just a thought. Peace, Tae Kyoshi Deborah R.
