I have a question for you Hung Gar Kung Fu Practitioners, is Hung Gar considered a hard style or a soft style of Martial Arts?

well... ya see, Hung Gar Kung Fu is hard/soft, external MA. so its both hard and soft, except it leans more towards the hard/external way, with a little soft,internal ki mixed in to it. so basicly it is a hard/soft external martial art (hung gar kung fu). well i hope this helps you,ok. bye. :)

I agree. Hung Gar, in the generic terminology of hard vs. soft, is a "hard" style from southern China (close fighting, strong blocks and strikes).

well, all 'modern' chinese martial arts have an aspect of breathing (or 'chi' in chinese).

 

to have proper control, your breathing has to be controlled and your breathing has to be settled etc, etc.

 

but i recall a brief conversation with a hung gar sifu whose basic reply was:

 

'if he uses technique, use technique back

 

if he uses strength, use strength back'

 

and

 

'if he hits you hard, hit him harder'

 

i should say that this is translated from cantonese and loses a bit of meaning...

hung gur is a hard style

 

however there is also soft technics in hung gar

 

anyway, there are also some shifu out there who teaches external arts using internal arts principles
