Treebranch
Grapple on the floor BJJ, Grapple on your feet TJJ or Judo. rb
Perhaps your local college or university will have a wrestling team. At the university i attend the program is free for anyone that wants to join and you can compete (for the school) if you are a full time student. It's a good deal as you get taught by certified national level coaches, facility pass for a year, you're tested for endurance and strength by techinicians and told how to improve. The club also has physio ppl to help if you get injured. Of course it will vary from school to school but check it out. The workout has a good intensity and will get you into good shape in a hurry. The moves are fairly easy to learn and the constant drilling allow a student to apply them quickly. Judo at the university is about 240 US a year, 50-60 bucks for a starter gi and 10 bucks for association registration. Clubs outside the university are more expensive - around 75-150 more per year. In contrast to wrestling I found the moves to be slightly more complex but still not impossible to learn. Judo also has lots of drilling and sparring making the turnaround for techiques fairly quick. Competitions are held locally about once a month. Don't know anything about BJJ. There hasn't been a stable school in the area.

SevenStar
Bayside academy of mixed martial arts is in Elizabeth. If that's too far of a drive, there are some bjj schools in philly.
guest
how much is reasonable to pay for bjj? i saw an internet ad for one school in philly that wanted 115 a month w/ a one year contract for maximum 2 classes a week. that seems steep to me. is that normal? JeffN10
Really weird...I'm in south jersey also looking to do some bjj training and I posted here looking for help about a month ago. I go to school at Rowan U. and was trying to find someone to start teaching classes at the rec center here. From what I've found, there's Ricardo Almedia's school about 40 min north of Rowan, and a Combat Submission Wrestling school about 20 min north of Rowan (both these times are from memory...may be a little off). There are also several places in Philly. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anyone willing to come to teach at Rowan for a price/circumstances I deemed reasonable. The going rate is about $15/person/class, which is quite tough for a college kid to come up with. Anyway, good luck with the search.
SevenStar
115 isn't bad - if the guy is a black belt. Under black belt level, between 60 and 90. That may vary from region to region and organization to organization, however.
