shotochem
Hi Everyone, I was wondering, how do you deal with sparring someone that is much quicker than you. Ive dealt with bigger and stronger and have sparred faster people. This guy just darts in and out I just can't catch him. Whenevr I give chase he tags me. When I get in close he scampers out or range. So far the only way I can get him is to wait and counter. That is still tough he hits and runs. The only other thing I found to be effective is to sweep him. When I get a paw on him I easily get him down and have the advantage. I just want to grab on and squash the little bugger Im getting tired of chasing him. Lately Im having an easier time sparring with the big guys. stl_karateka
Sounds like you need to work on your speed. Counter speed with speed! As far as him running around the ring....cut him off. Work your change step so you can easy change your gaurd. Control the center of the ring...keep him in the corner with roundouse kicks KarateForums.com Sempai
G95champ
You beat speed with power. You only have a few chances to land a good shot make it count. If your doing light contact I sugest find a new sport lol. Block his arms and hope you hurt them and slow him down. (General George S. shotochem
The funny thing is that when we freespar without points I tend to overpower him and have the advantage. When we do take downs and grapple I pretty much own him. Its just when it comes to the point fighting "Love Tap" attacks hes just flat out faster than me. Im more of a brawler than a finesser. We are of equal rank hes 10 yrs younger and made of rubber. Hes taller and lighter Im a little smaller and more muscular. Hes pure speed, I"m raw power. I think Ill try not to get baited into his kind of fight. We are good friends so its just friendly rivalry. We just make each other better. He was just driving me crazy the night before I posted this. ( Besides, the loser had to buy the drinks...... ) You really can teach and old dog a new trick......... karatekid1975
I love it when we spar with take downs Shoto, I am just like you. I'm not that quick, but if you let me get in on you, I'm going to leave a hurtin on you LOL. I'm flexible, so I can kick from close range, and most people are like "Wha.... Where the heck that come from????" As far as your buddy goes, be a counter attacker. Don't try to be him to the punch (no pun intended). Instead, wait and counter what he throws. You may have to still work on speed, but this should work after a while. Laurie F
Treebranch
Counter speed with timing. Grab his leading arm and punch him in the solarplexus. Bait him and time it, move in and grapple the little bastard. kempocos
Sounds like you have found how to beat him, just watch how he retreats learn to cut him off chances are there is a pattern to his retreat learn to have him move into a technique. Speed is nothing if you are always retreating. keep him in the corner so to speak. less floor less places to run to then your power and grappling will do thier job "If you don't want to get hit while sparring , join the cardio class"
