Why didn't you use your karate?"Master: "Hitting him with a chair was the only karate I could think of at the time."Lesson: Practice until you don't have to think. jarrettmeyer
On an earlier topic: How can one pray without meditation? If your thoughts are not clear and collected, how can you possibly hear anything that God would choose to tell you? Quality prayer begins and ends with quality meditation. As for the "source" of the Ki: If you believe in Judaism or Christianity, then you also believe that all things are from God. It is what you do with it that really matters. Whether it comes to a board test or striking another human, hopefully everyone here recognizes the difference. Of course, I am just a newbie in MA for a few weeks. What do I really know about anything? Jarrett Meyer"The only source of knowledge is experience."-- Albert Einstein

The Bible encourages you to meditate... but in that context, it means "focused thinking". For instance, 'meditating' a math problem. The way you mean it, I don't think you need to meditation to "hear" God. The Bible is full of numerous accounts where God has spoken to people, or led them, or given them a significant message, etc. through more unconventional means of communication "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Sir Winston Churchill

Perhaps I was overzealous in my previous comment. Before starting MA (only a few weeks, mind you), I used to fence, ride horses, and do Yoga. When I stretch, relax, calm myself, meditate, etc. I feel part of something bigger. I know, that sounds corny and cliche. It's just that if I don't do those things, my brain gets in the way of everything I do. When I meditate, I can feel the horse's breathing, react to my fencing opponent's movements faster, and generally notice much more success in what I'm doing. Personally, that also includes prayer. Sasori_Te
Very good post jarrtettmeyer. I agree with what you are trying to say here. Meditation can calm the mind and help you become more a part of what is going on around you rather than having all your attention taken up by what is going on inside you. I too feel very connected with everything after I meditate. A block is a strike is a lock is a throw.
gojuchad
I am a Christian and have been training goju-ryu for many years now. The idea of ki is using your bodies energy it is FOCUSING it. Just because you dont understand it dosent mean that its bad. God gave you your body so take it to its full potential. On a side note be careful and stand by your faith, there is some religion such as Buddhism and Shinto mixed in with martial arts but what I do is to find the Christian equivilient to it. I shouldnt say equivilent because its much better. I have a Japanese teacher and he is Shinto, but I made it very clear early on that I am a Christian and he totally respects that. If your teacher does not simply leave immedieatly, there are more important things than karate. God Bless Draw close to god, and god will draw close to you. Vito
ki is black magic, youre all going to hell. but then, buddhists doesnt believe in hell, so youre just being reincarnated. but then, christianity doesnt believe in that, youre going to heaven, hell, or as of the mideaval times, pergatory too... but then shintoism says forget all that... hell.. ki.. reincarnation... praise allah... damnation, salvation, save the nation... passivism... third jihad... devilry... crusades... love thy neighbor... you are the one, neo... convert by the sword... taoist tree falling that makes a sound or doesnt (?)... thou shalt not kill... enlightenment... nirvanna... ::explodes:: "If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared." -Machiavelli
