Punching and Kicking air

Punching the air forces you to do "all the work" but its not realistic work. When you punch the air you have to conciously start slowing your fist down before you reach full extension. Otherwise you compromise balance (see Treebranch's post). When you punch a bag you accelerate your fist the whole time. Your muscles are never working in the opposite direction, so you train yourself to deliver more power.

 

An internal force is a physics thing. If you throw a punch into the air the force acting equal and opposite to your accelerating fist on you is equally cancelled by the force when your fist comes to a stop.

 

In my old TKD dojang people would learn to do side kicks "internally" against air then the first time they went to hit a bag (and generally for quite a while as they relearned the motion) they would lose their balance because they weren't used to shifting their weight into a kick.

 

So LEARNING techniques with no bag is fine, but you're in for a surprise the first time you use them if you've never practiced them with a bag.

cars bad example.

 

makes no difference in a straight line sprint.

 

both cars will be going flat out and slowing down will only occur after they have crossed the line.

 

I think you missed the point. There was a cliff at the very end of the track and if the cars didn't stop right on the finish line they would going over it and making fire - thus the slowing down before the finish line.

i got that bit but then that also depends on the driver.

 

like i said, i take treebranch's post to refer to hitting a bag.

 

i can see us going in circles for a long time...

 

to keep it brief.

 

the end point of a punch is not the contact point of a punch.

 

therefore, your arm is not slowing down as you hit your contact point.

post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are.

Boxers shadow box (punch air), and do bag work. Why do they do this? Because both are necessary. Hitting a bag helps you work on power and shadow boxing is good for speed and transitions to different punches. If you don't get it by now I'm going to be shocked.

When you hit a bag you are using your full strenght but only for a few minutes!! Don't forget that.. when I´m training kicks in a bag with full speed and strenght.. my leg get's hurt!!!! But it was in the bag that I learn to kick

i never said that punching air helps power.

 

you said that punching air actually reduces your power.

 

that is what i disagree with.

 

you say that when punching air, you slow down your punch.

 

i argued that you don't because your target is way before your full extension

 

i.e your arm is still accelerating whilst hitting past your target.

 

i said a long time ago that you need to do both because neither one in isolation works your punch fully.

post count is directly related to how much free time you have, not how intelligent you are.
