Starting to hate the martial arts

Read the articles first. Especially 101 and Mu -sections. Then, think about the things that you feel about disagreeing - usually there are several views to the subject. Don't think "you can't think that way!" but "OK, that's one view".

After that, you might feel like signing in to Forum. But don't post anything to Forum if you haven't got yourself familiar with the rest of the site.

I just decided to prep you a bit before you go and rush in. The Forum-section is rather heavily moderated - and people who haven't read the pages usually get a pretty quick snap.

maybe you've reached your plateau. Take a break from your current style and try a different one. Ask your instructor if there is something new you can learn. Teach new techniques. Something to get you excited abut the martial arts again.

It didn't get that, could you repeat it? Thank you

My instructor made a deal with me, I would teach 3 classes a week and in return I would get a free membership. I'm not even a Black Belt in this system but I do have over a decade of experience in the martial arts. Lately though I attend class and just end up teaching some one a kata or somthing, I'm starting to hate taking and teaching class.

Hmmm... That´s not good. You should guit teaching, IMAO. A teacher who doesn´t like what he is teaching is not a good teacher. I´m not really saying that you a bad teacher, but if you don´t like MA, you shouldn´t take away the fun from the students too. They will probably get to know your feelings. So, take a break and try something new.

It sounds like you agreed to teach, in order to get lessons for free. This is common in a number of schools. However, usually this is done only with 1st dans and above.

Never-the-less, it appears as though your instructors end of the deal is not getting honored. You're doing the teaching, but you're not getting your own lessons in.

If you're not enjoying it any more only because you don't get your own training in, then I'd have a discussion with your instructor. If you're simply not enjoying being there any longer, then I'd say take a break. Take a look around and see if any others re-kindle your enthusiasm.

Thanks for the heads up --- I found the site about 2 hours ago when someone referenced the improper use of "OSU"

I'll be honest, my first thoughts (especially after reading his finding a good dojo) was that while he has some good thoughts he's very arrogant and opinionated. I have no desire to post on his forums --- I get all the karate talk I need right here :D Besides, its probably mostly Shotokan stuff right?

I'll skim thru the rest of it when I get some down time I work for the week -- thanks for the head's up thought :P

It originated as a Shotokan stuff, now the forum has spread to cover pretty much all karate styles.

His style is his style - get past the style and read what he says. Worth thinking, I think. And, at least it is a honest opinion expressed without overly excusing way.

And I like the style - we Finns tend to talk straight, without softening our message too much. Straight talk and strong opinions makes me feel good. :)

How much of that experience includes teaching? It sounds like you are either:

1. new to the teaching game, and might need some time to get used to the subtle training differences that occur when you take on a teaching role.

2. you've taught before, and you hate it, and you always will. this doesn't seem likely since if it was true, you wouldn't have agreed to the deal.

KSN Doug gives some good advice. Try to rationally discuss this with your instructor and see if any changes can be made. If not, then I guess you have a choice to either deal with it and stick it out, or find another school.

I'm no longer posting here. Adios.

Ever since I can remember I have been doing martial arts in one way or another. I have allways done it and have questioned why I have done it.

About two months ago I started teaching and to be honest I'm losing my interest in the martial arts. It has become work, instead of me wanting to go to class every night I have to go to class because I teach it. I cant afford to pay the tuition that the school requires. I have been put in the position of quit or do somthing that I dont like to do.

Should I just pick up and leave? or should I just bare it?
