Sho-ju Posted November 7, 2003 Posted November 7, 2003 This topic is kind of wrong. There is no "karate weapon", because karate means empty hand. It should be: What is your favourite MA weapon. Karate now means 'empty hand' but did mean Tang/China hand at one time. I believe weapons are apart of our art. OSU!
Jussi Häkkinen Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 This topic is kind of wrong. There is no "karate weapon", because karate means empty hand. It should be: What is your favourite MA weapon. Not true. Karate does include weapons in many styles. Although "karate" means "empty hand", it is a pretty modern name for the art. Empty hand can also to be able to grab a weapon - I think that name as well implies that side. Jussi HäkkinenOkinawan Shorin-Ryu Seibukan Karate-Do (Kyan Chotoku lineage)TurkuFinland

battousai16 Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 yawara stick? is that like a kali stick or is that something completely different? "I hear you can kill 200 men and play a mean six string at the same time..."-Six String Samurai
Jussi Häkkinen Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 Yawara stick is a short weapon that varies a bit from its shape. It is practically a very short baton, about 1.5 times the width of your palm. Common usage is to use the ends of the baton to strike the vulnerable points of the body. Yawara stick is not unalike the better known "kubotan" weapon. Jussi HäkkinenOkinawan Shorin-Ryu Seibukan Karate-Do (Kyan Chotoku lineage)TurkuFinland

SaiFightsMS Posted November 9, 2003 Posted November 9, 2003 The kubotan key-chain that many carry is a descendant of the yawara.

I'm finding out the same holds true with kamas --- not as much though --- perhaps it is cause I am still more familiar with the sai KarateForums.com Sempai
