there's many good styles that would do what you're looking for. That said, I would discourage you from taking up Thai boxing because they do a lot of body conditioning that is effective but painful and probably shortens your life ... so much for self-defence, eh?

You should also avoid any style that wants you to break wood. It's stupid, adds almost nothing to your self-defence skills, and will almost definitely give you arthritis in later life.

As for the internal styles (xingyi, bagua, etc.), I'll let you in on a little secret. Most people will tell you that they're good, but they are slower to develop than some others. Fact of the matter is, the internal styles achieve their results by developing a kind of energy. In other words, if you take up xingyi, bagua or (martial) taiji -- the latter being very hard to find -- you'll probably find that you develop useful skills, not to mention better health and general well being.

One of the most amazing thing about the martial arts is that there are so many and that they are so different. There are arts that are suited to body types. Some developed in relation to the physical terrain. Weapons developed in deference to the weather and the amount and style of clothing worn.

I truely believe that there is a type of martial art out there for anyone interested. Some Shor-in ryu styles of karate have much higher stances than other karate styles.

Issh-in ryu karate utilizes kicks only to the lower body areas. They have really high stances. Some of their schools also have a really kick-butt attitude.

Keep looking and trying there is a style that will fit you.

I didn't go into TKD for the same reason. I'm not as light as you (195lbs), but the other descriptions are the same (except I'm 35 and can't dance worth a dime). I wound up in Kuk Sool Won almost by accident, and found it to suit my body style and physical abilities perfectly. It starts you out with lower kicks and all the basic hand strikes, while teaching you "grappling" type techniques as well.

You might try Hapikdo as well, in the event you have one closer than a KSW school. Go watch a few classes of the different suggestions you've seen here before deciding.

O.K.,

I think (based on your stats) that you should take a form of karate.Your kicks do not have to be high because your hands become just as lethal.
